October 1991 General Conference Priesthood Session

David B. Haight -A Time for Preparation
  • An individual or a team must be prepared. Success or achievement depends upon preparation.
  • People of great faith know what is right and do it. They have uncompromised determination and commitment and are capable of enduring pressure or hardship.
  • "Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality. It is ... words that speak boldly of your intentions; and ... actions which speak louder than ... words. It is ... coming through time after time after time, year after year after year. It is what character is made of."
  • You are beginning to develop a sensitivity for Christlike service to others that brings joy to one's soul.
  • We have our agency to choose right from wrong, good from evil. But just because evil exists does not mean that we must partake of it. You cannot do wrong and feel right.
  • You young men are the protectors of your sisters and of the girls with whom you associate.
  • Good people believe in you. We believe in you, your parents and brothers and sisters believe in you, and God expects the best from you. You must believe in yourself.
  • Don't give in when the going is rough, for you are laying the foundation of a great work, and that great work i your life, the fulfillment of your dreams. Never underestimate what you can become or how your talents may eventually be used.
  • Do others set your standards--what you will wear and what you will do--and not do?
  • Our actions, our personal behavior, and our attitude determine our character and future.
  • The world needs someone to look up to--like you.
  • "There comes a time when we must take a stand--when we draw a line in the dust and say, 'Beyond this line, we do not go.'"
  • Change bad behavior to good--and do it now.
  • "I teach them correct principles, and they govern themselves."
Rex D. Pinegar -Follow Christ in Word and Deed
  • "It is easy to be a Mormon and accept the theology. It is difficult to be a Christian and follow Christ in word and deed."
  • If Jesus' teachings were widely followed, [you] would have no hesitation in placing Jesus first!
  • "Where do we rank Jesus Christ in our lives? Does He come first, as He should?" Perhaps a more significant question would be, "Where would we rank ourselves as followers of Jesus' teachings?" Do we live as Christians in word and deed?
  • "Every morning I tell the good Lord that if there is anyone in need of my help today, please guide me to them."
  • Perhaps the greatest of Christian acts are those we never hear about. They are deeds done quietly, spontaneously, anonymously, without expectation of recognition or compensation. Christian acts begin with Christlike thoughts in our hearts. Then, Christ's teachings and His characteristics will be reflected naturally in our actions. Soon, there will be more friendly smiles, more kindly words, more courteous responses from us--all seemingly small, insignificant acts, yet they can have a great impact in all our lives. President Rex Lee of BYU has said, "Christlike niceness is ... the cornerstone of [Christ's] teachings."
  • Sometimes we are asked to give more than we feel we are capable of giving or more than we really want to give. We may feel burdened with expectations and responsibilities. It is then we learn that following Christ also requires sacrifice, commitment, and courage.
  • When we place Jesus first in our lives, He will guide our decisions and give us the strength to avoid temptations.
  • Such actions will provide us and those we serve with spiritual strength to endure.
Dennis B. Neuenschwander -To a Missionary Son
  • Your mission will be exactly what you decide to make it.
  • Your young but strong shoulders bear the responsibility of the call you willingly and happily accepted.
  • Make the inevitable challenges of missionary work steppingstones for your own spiritual growth. Determine now that nothing will keep you from magnifying with honor your missionary call.
  • There is no way a successful missionary can have one foot in the world and one in his missionary labors.
  • Resist bringing extra luggage with you into the mission field, both in your suitcase and in your mind.
  • If we would learn to be silent, the Brethren could teach us a lot.
  • A person who can be taught is also one who can be trusted.
  • Make the scriptures the basic doctrinal textbook of your mission.
  • The real success of a mission is not measured on a chart--it is etched in your heart and in the hearts of those whose lives are eternally changed because of you.
  • Love every minute of your service.
Jorge A. Rojas -Covenants and Ordinances
  • No one goes back without His help.
  • What good will a covenant do (I agree to do something), or an ordinance (I hereby sign the agreement) if you ultimately don't comply with it?
  • Baptism puts us on the starting line--the starting line of that road that will take us back to His presence.
Thomas S. Monson -"Called to Serve"
  • Brethren, we too have been called to follow Him as fishers of men, laborers in the vineyard to build boys and mend men and bring all unto Christ.
  • Calls to serve are to be preceded by careful thought and earnest prayer.
  • "Now, brethren, if the good Lord wanted to put a forty-year-old head on a nineteen-year-old boy, he would have done so. But He didn't. He placed a nineteen-year-old head on a nineteen-year-old body, and we should be a bit more understanding."
  • Youth need fewer critics and more models to follow.
  • No participant in Church-sponsored athletic contests should warm the bench for the entire game.
  • At times your tasks may seem overwhelming, and discouragement may creep into your lives. Our Heavenly Father has inspired your call and desires that you succeed.
  • Be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great.
  • "I love you. I don't know when, or if, I'll be back; but I love the gospel, and I must follow my Savior."
Gordon B. Hinckley -Our Solemn Responsibilities
  • Our relationship was sometimes sweet and sometimes difficult. Things were never perfect because I am not a perfect woman and he is not a perfect man, but many things were good. I did not expect perfection, I just kept trying.
  • Please remind the brethren that the physical and verbal abuse of women is INEXCUSABLE, NEVER ACCEPTABLE, AND A COWARDLY WAY OF DEALING WITH DIFFERENCES.
  • Who can calculate the wounds inflicted, their depth and pain, by harsh and mean words spoken in anger? How pitiful a sight is a man who is strong in many ways but who loses all control of himself when some little thing, usually of no significant consequence, disturbs his equanimity. In every marriage there are, of course, occasional differences. But I find no justification for tempers that explode on the slightest provocation.
  • A violent temper is such a terrible, corrosive thing. And the tragedy is that it accomplishes no good; it only feeds evil with resentment and rebellion and pain.
  • You may think it is the macho thing to flare up in anger and swear and profane the name of thew Lord. It is not the macho thing. It is an indication of weakness. Anger is not an expression of strength. It is an indication of one's inability to control his thoughts, words, his emotions. Of course it is easy to get angry. When the weakness of anger takes over, the strength of reason leaves. Cultivate within yourselves the mighty power of self-discipline.
  • In its purest form, truth is not a polite tap on the shoulder. It is a howling reproach.
  • Altogether too many men, leaving their wives at home in the morning and going to work, where they find attractively dressed and attractively made-up young women, regard themselves as young and handsome, and as an irresistible catch. They complain that their wives do not look the same as they did twenty ears ago when they married them. To which I say, Who would, after living with you for twenty years?
  • The complaint of a husband, after eighteen years of marriage and five children, that he no longer loves his wife is, in my judgement, a feeble excuse for the violation of covenants made before God and also the evasion of the responsibilities that are the very strength of the society of which we are a part. The finding of fault with consequent divorce is usually preceded by a long period in which little mistakes are spoken of in harsh and angry language, where tiny molehills of difference grow into great mountains of conflict. I am satisfied that the more unkindly a wife is treated, the less attractive she becomes. She loses pride in herself. She develops a feeling of worthlessness. Of course it shows.
  • A husband who domineers his wife, who demeans and humiliates her, and who makes officious demands upon her not only injures her, but he also belittles himself. And in many cases, he plants a pattern of future similar behavior in his sons.
  • It takes effort. It takes self-control. It takes unselfishness. It requires the true essence of love, which is an anxious concern for the well-being and happiness of one's companion.

An Odd Combination

You know how there are some combinations of food....where they just don't sound that good together?
Yet they actually taste good?
Well, today I had one of those.
It was a chip dip.
And really tasty.
One of the others thought that it was just cream cheese and salsa together.
But it wasn't.
It was yogurt.
Yah.
Yogurt and Salsa mixed together.
O.o
Sounds so weird.
But it's so tasty!
I think that the salsa got rid of the yogurt taste...but I'm not quite sure.
I just know it was pink and tasted good. :) lol

The Dream

I was driving on a freeway...I think somewhere in Maryland, trying to get someplace in a hurry. But the freeways...were complicated and reminiscent of many a hot wheel racing track where there would be steep inclines and declines with sharp turns...it was also kinda bit like those marble racing tracks as well, but with cars. As I climbed to the top of a really high almost touch the clouds part of the road. I looked down at the steep incline and...shuddered, my vision doubled for a moment from fear, I didn't want to go down this sharp slide, but I couldn't go back the way I did, so I took a deep breath and pushed myself down the road -for a moment it was like I was a kid pushing cars down the track ands I wasn't actually in the car going down the track. There were other parts of the road, like roundabouts where you just went around an island going the same way, as part of the race. Along with dealing with construction...it was rather frustrating. But then I ended up in this fancy mansion....where I was kinda a guest of honor...and kinda just a stranger who stumbled into something they shouldn't have and my hosts wanted to get something in particular from me, but I was too smart for them, and hid it where they couldn't find it. I was packing up my bags with the assistance of Kikay, who had brought in a bag with a large bread bowl with creamy soup inside. I'd moved things around so that I could get most everything into three bags though I wasn't sure how I was going to carry them all, one of the hosts came in and distracted me, taking me away from my room and the bags to show me something. But I didn't bite...I think they tried to offer me money in exchange for what I had that they wanted. I refused and went to return to my rooms, where I realized there was one big circle of hallways happening. I ended up in a room full of pumpkins that I'd bought. Half of them were carved, and my mom told me that I needed to take the pumpkins down to the school so that they could be painted. I grabbed about half the pumpkins and walked down with them and the paint to the corner of our street...but its was also the corner of the street between the double churches and the institute parking lot that lead to the institute. I paused at the corner where thee chain linked fence began, and started painting the corner there. I'm not quite sure why I did it, but I think 'my kind' had to do that sort of thing in order to be accepted into the main flow of people. I had to paint repeating patterns of color down to the corner, which was time consuming. I know that I started with purple and ended with purple...other colors I used were blue, green...and some kind of yellow shade. All in the paler shades of color...pastels. I had just finished the last purple stripe when my mom walked by and asked where the other pumpkins were. I ran back up to the church to get them and discovered...that they had rotted. The pumpkins had had faces in them, but I hadn't thought they were carved...but they were all squishy and such, so we couldn't use them.....

Then the unholy tones of daylight pulled me away....
and I became myself again. :)

A Locket In My Pocket

...Actually it landed on my foot today, instead. :)
I knew this moment was coming.
I mean I'd dropped the piece of lock like six times already today at work.
It just kinda happens because it's one of those locks that comes apart.
You know one half is the loop, the other half the lock, and the key separates them.
Well...I usually forget that the key is holding the block half of the lock.
And I end up doing something which turns the keys downwards.
Consequently dropping the block lock thing to the ground.
Twice already it had tried to hide underneath the lockers.
Now....it had it's revenge.
As again, I wasn't paying attention.
Then Suddenly.
I felt it.
BLAMO!
PAIN!
The lock landed on my toes!!
Ow.
Ow.
Ow!!!
That was extremely painful.
But I don't think I broke my fourth toe...
At least I hope not.
It doesn't hurt when I move it manually.
Putting on shoes is another matter lol.

So >.>
<.<
Beware.

The Locks are out to get You!!
For...I didn't put it in my pocket. ;) haha

The Dream

I was in a home, that kinda reminded me of my Grandma Dirchi's home...and kinda not. I was with a couple of other people and we were searching through the home, trying to find the secret passageways that led to the treasure. There was also another guy with dark hair who wanted to find the treasure himself. His motives on how to do that weren't clear and in the beginning I worked against him trying to solve the riddle before he did, but in the end I showed him what the treasure actually was. It was a bunch of shiny...makeupkits that had been shined up to reflect like metal. When light shined on them it made a bright light. That was the treasure. He was grateful we'd found it for him, and as he drove away he turned back to have the car lights shine into the room and have the whole place light up like it was a bomb explosion (that's how bright it was. it didn't really explode). My sister and I were on the run, constantly moving and trying to hide ourselves because we had the mark that people took to mean we were outcasts just because we were different. We were walking together when I noticed a big drunk man following us. I told Kikay in our madeup language to go a different direction and I would meet up with her later. The guy pulled a gun on us though, but I attacked him, hitting him repeatedly in the head with his own gun after I got him to fire all the bullets into the sky away from us. I ran from him as he wouldn't stay down and ended up at the college, going up different stairs in the library and preparing for a show where Vocal Point would be preforming in a ring type configuration for a small concert. I had problems though, I'd forgotten something so I dashed outside...but couldn't remember where I had parked the car so I could gt home. I couldnt' remember if I had actually walked or not. Then Kikay called me to tell me something else and I dashed back to the school and up the stairs of a library study loft/classroom to get my shoes and return to the concert area to help out when....

then unholy tones of daylight pulled me away....
and I became myself again. :)

An Overload

There I was,
In the store.
Craving sweets.
So I bought some.
Some frosted cookies.
And some nummy cookie dough.
My sweetness satisfied.
But then,
Kikay decided that we should make cookies.
So cookies we made!
Yum Yum.
Then....Came a ward prayer
Where LaKai made cake.
Two of them.
One for ward prayer.
and a Red Velvet for us roomies.
That Tuesday, we had a pumpkin carving thing.
And I brought home a whole...24 tray filled with more frosted cookies.
Then LaKai brought home snicker doodles.
I bought some Cookies and Creme chocolates.
And finally....with some ice cream mixed in.
We made brownies last night.

Needless to say.....
I've reached my sweetness overload.....
way before Halloween.

This can't be happening!
I mean. Halloween isn't here yet!
The full sweetness effect hasn't kicked in yet!!

Candy Candy Candy!!!!
Which means.
>.>
Mission: Give our treats to others quick! Has begun.
Dun dun dun.

The Dream

I had my friends Tay and Jess over to visit in my parents house. We were having a great time, and Tay decided to play the piano. She began quietly and a familiar melody filled the room. I sat down at a piano right behind her, and played as well, mixing my notes in with hers. I had the deeper more 'boom bang bang' notes while she had the softer melody. I was just running my hands over the cords, not knowing what I was doing, but everything I did sounded right. It was only when we ended that I realize we'd been playing "Winterwind" by Jon Schmidt. Tay went to go freshen up, and Jess and I were left in the room. Jess started a conversation...about a story. My thoughts were like 'oh no...I just want to have a conversation that didn't go into stories, because I haven't been creative in the story collaboration area. She said "You know that idea you had with Preston -the guy with golden wings- who gets rammed into a cliff and stranded there?" I was like "Yah." "Well, I was thinking that we should have a ____" I gave her a blank look, because she said a name I didn't recognize, and didn't remember. She said "You know...a  flying ship like from that one show." "Ooooh" "I was thinking the pirates on that ship should kidnap Preston from off the cliff...." I was trying to picture the moment, but my mouth was full of gum, and I wanted to have a clear mouth when discussing the story, because I actually found it intriguing.  So I spit out the gum, but still felt pieces stuck to my teeth, so I pulled out strand after strand after strand. It seemed like I couldn't fully get the gum out. When I looked up from the window of my bedroom and saw a plane flying low to the ground. At first glance it looked like one of those single cockpit single wing planes. But as me and my family watched it bobbing about in the wind -kinda like a helicopter and it wasn't made to be a helicopter- I started praying that the people inside wouldn't be seriously hurt....as it hit the ground by the factory. And twisted and turned doing cartwheels in the air. I couldn't keep watching it.

Then the unholy tones of daylight pulled me away....
And I became myself again. :)

The Overcoat

Junius Burt of Salt Lake City, a longtime worker in the Streets Department, related a touching and inspirational experience.
He declared that on a cold winter morning, the street cleaning-crew of which he was a member was removing large chunks of ice from the street gutters.
The regular crew was assisted by temporary laborers who desperately needed the work.
One such wore only a lightweight sweater and was suffering from the cold.
A slender man with a well-groomed beard stopped by the crew and asked the worker, "You need more than that sweater on a morning like this. Where is your coat?"
The man replied that he had no coat to wear.
The visitor then removed his own overcoat, handed it to the man and said, "This coat is yours. It is heavy wool and will keep you warm. I just work across the street."
The street was South Temple.
The Good Samaritan who walked into the Church Administration Building to his daily work and without his coat was President George Albert Smith of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
His selfless act of generosity revealed his tender heart.
Surely he was his brother's keeper.

The Dream

I was sitting on a school bus...maybe a city bus, and Kikay was next to me. Ahead of me a gunman opened up fire shooting through the seats. I pulled Kikay next to me and we slid down in our seats trying to avoid the bullets. I didn't want Kikay to get hit, so I was trying to figure out how to survive. But as the bullets went through the seats, Kikay laid down against me....and I feared she'd been hit,

Pumpkins Pumpkins Everywhere!

It's the season to get a carving or decorating! Woot!

Soo a week or so ago, we had a pumpkin carving night at my ward.
Each apartment could carve one pumpkin. (:( Only one...sighs)
So LaKai and I carved this pumpkin!

He has a moustache!! :D Hehe ^^;;
LaKai and I wanted a pumpkin with a moustache so we made one! :D

Here he is all lit up! :D
:( Only the sad thing about pumpkins when they're carved....
Is that they go moldy pretty quickly.
Yah...Kikay and I came home from General Conference up at my parents to a rather scary pumpkin.
I didn't take a picture of it as Kikay and I rushed it out to the dumpster ASAP with me protecting my hands with a pair of medical gloves.
But here's a mental picture to illustrate.
The smile had flattened to an old woman's creepy smile.
The eyes were filmed over with black mold.
And inside the pumpkin, long white hair-like mold, similar to the hair you see on Einstein was growing all around.
Plus..it was dripping pumpkin juice all over the place.
*shudders*
That was super creepy to come home to an evil looking pumpkin. :S

lol. ^^;;
Needless to say I enjoyed painting pumpkins more.
Remember  on Sunday that I said I was painting pumpkins during the last conference?
Well.
Here they are!! :)

First off mine. :)

Recognize who it is? :) lol
So the story behind my pumpkin....
Is that I really wanted to paint Spiderman.
Since my music video I've made...I've been a bit obsessed about it.
So I started out with Spiderman...only to discover,
that my imagination is more vivid and detailed,
then my painting skills can match.
He was looking a bit like a kindergarten painting.
Soo I erased that work,
and looked about for another inspiration.
First off, I saw Kikay and Daddoo doing faces.
So i was like: I should do a face too!
But of what?!
That's when I turned to my other kinda obsession.
Yep.
Case Closed.
haha. I was trying to do a face of Conan Edogawa.
And it worked! Because Kikay took one look at my pumpkin and went: Conan?
Yep.
Though, to everyone else who doesn't watch Case Closed...it's just a fun pumpkin face. :)

Now! To the others!
Daddoo's
So many colors. :D lol. I really like the teeth on this pumpkin ^^

Kikay:

So CUTE and ADORABLE! :D

Is she looking at Conan? Hmmm I wonder... ;)

Meralto decided to go against the grain and did his Meteor Maverick logo. :)

And finally!
Mother Dearest's Pumpkin! :)
lol. Actually...Kikay and I collaborated on this pumpkin and painted it for her! :3

Hehe. :)
Kikay had heard me mention that I was trying to do Spiderman...and she thought.
Why not? And painted Spiderman's eyes.
I was tempted to leave the pumpkin just with the eyes.
But then my creative side got to me.
And so I painted the rest of the face. ^^;;
I tried to keep the Spiderman theme...by using the red and blue. :) lol

And there you have it. ^^;;
Our pumpkins!
It was actually a lot of fun, just to sit down and paint faces like when we were younger. Though Daddoo would draw the faces for us kids and then we'd paint them. lol.
It seems like recently we've been doing the more 'artsy' pumpkins with people and scenes and such painted on them.
Just doing a simple face....was relaxing. ^^

Just A Little Pinch

So, I've been told that the parakeets like to bite.
Yep...
They do.
They like to nibble at your fingers.
But that's just because you're holding them in an enclosed space between your fingers and they want to get out and fly again.
Today, I had to handle three of them.
And yes, all three bite me.
Though none drew blood.
It was more like I was being pinched by an annoying younger sibling.
It kinda hurts yes, but the pain is momentary.

lol that...or else I have a higher threshold of pain then others...as I didn't flinch at all when they bit me.
Who knows...
I do know that I fear getting bitten by the hamsters more then the birds, as I've seen the hamsters draw blood, and I've yet to see that from any of the birds. :) lol

The Dream

...I had an end of the world sort of dream...and I really don't like those. Where you have to gather supplies in the house, take care of animals, figure out how we're going to get food and water, if the car has enough gas....not a very fun dream.
