182nd Semi-Annual General Conference Sunday Highlights

Day two of conferences is here! It's both an exciting and sad moment, as I know that it will be six months before the next conference starts. So as before, here are some highlights of the talks that I wrote down, they're not exactly word for word, but they are my thoughts. :) Also, sorry if you find the Sunday Afternoon session lacking in notes....I was painting pumpkins with the family. ^^;;
To listen/read/watch the talks in their entirety, please visit: http://www.lds.org/general-conference/sessions/2012/10?lang=eng :)

Sunday Morning

Elder Henry B. Eyring
  • God is never hidden, but sometimes we are.
  • We may be unwilling to listen and submit to his will and give him our time.
  • God is close to us, and aware of us, and never hides from his faithful children.
  • We can’t insist on our time table when the Lord has his own.
  • His time should be enough for us, for we should know that he wants only what is best.
  • The Lord’s Time is always calculated to bless.
  • The movement towards God can be ongoing.
  • The pavilion hiding you may be the fear of man.
Elder Boyd K. Packer
  • Jesus Christ is the light and the life of the world, if we fix on him we’ll be guided to spiritual safety.
Sister Linda K. Burton
  • We are the Lord’s hands here on the Earth.
  • First, Observe then Serve.
  • Do good to them who hate you.
  • What you want people to do to you, do to them.
  • Serving isn’t always convenient or serve our own time table.
  • Am I doing this for the Savior, or am I doing this for me?
Brother Walter F. Gonzalez
  • The Lord can give us knowledge when we navigate the celestial web in our minds and hearts.
  • We can access the celestial web by reading scriptures, listening to a prophets voice, and by just sitting still and letting spiritual thoughts and promptings come to mind.
  • Access to this spiritual web is denied by iniquity and going against the Lord.
  • Iniquity hampers our ability to feel for others.
  • Every soul can see and feel with assuredly that Christ suffered for our sins.
  • Thanks to him wounded souls may be healed and broken hearts, mended.
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland
  • Isn’t it obvious that when I want fish, I can get fish? What I need is disciples, someone who will serve me forever and bring the children of men unto me. I need someone who loves me, truly, truly loves me and what our Heavenly Father has commissioned me to do.
  • This is not hopeless. This is the work of Almighty, not to be consigned to the ash pile of history.
  • The crowning characteristic of Love is always Loyalty.
  • We can’t go back.
  • Nothing will be as it was before.
  • Stay true, love God, lend a hand.
President Thomas S. Monson
  • Don’t dwell on the negative but dwell on the small blessings in our lives.
  • Look for the blessings large and small that you have received.
  • Pay heed to the guidance of the spirit.
  • The more we act upon the spirit, the more the Lord will entrust to us his errands.
  • Never postpone a prompting.
  • The opportunity to be a blessing in the life of another often comes unexpectedly.
  • No concern of ours is too small or insignificance. The lord is in the details of our lives.
  • The Lord is in all of our lives.
Sunday Afternoon

Elder Robert D. Hales
  • Go straight away and active immediately and decisively
  • The call to be a Christian can seem demanding and overwhelming.
  • Continually reach out to rescue love and welcome people around you.
  • He that continues in light continues in the Lord.
Elder Richard G. Scott
  • Engage in family history research and temple work, not just one or the other.
  • A great way to keep Satan’s influence away is to go to the temple
  • Help to complete the work for ancestors.
  • Together we can and will accomplish the work.
  • You don’t have to be a genealogist any more to do ancestor work.
  • Others are around who can help you have success.
Brother Russell T. Osguthorpe
  • Conversation isn’t a one time event but a lifetime work to becoming like Christ.
  • Learning for conversion is a continual process of knowing, doing and becoming.
  • When doubt comes we will keep going. Nothing will stop us from accomplishing our mission.
Brother Marcus B. Nash
  • Faith if strongly attached to the rock of the Lord, will help us through our journey of life.
  • Faith is a principle of action and of power.
  • Faith brings us the power of the Lord.
  • With God’s help nothing is impossible.
  • Do not disregard faith no more then you would detach a wing from a plane in flight.
  • Seek learning by study and by faith.
  • Faith precedes and produces miracles for which we don’t have immediate explanations
Brother Daniel L. Johnson
  • Even if resources are scarce look to help others who are in dire straights compared to you.
Brother Don R. Clarke
  • Bear one another's burdens.
  • Are you thinking of the Savior during the Sacrament, or of other things.
  • Focus.
  • Never forget the day you are baptized.
  • During Sacrament meeting we can receive inspiration for our problems.
  • You must come prepared, be willing to listen, and not be distracted.
Elder David A Bednar
  • Conversion is an offering of self, love and loyalty.
  • Testimony is a point of departure not a destination.
  • Testimony alone will not be enough to protect us in the latter day storm of evil which we are living in.
President Thomas S. Monson
  • Don’t be critical of others.
  • Serve faithfully in your callings.
  • Be of good cheer.
Until you next read these words;
I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

The Dream

I was outside, and saw a boy...named Bryan Tagge walking in the snow. But suddenly there was gunfire, I knocked him down to the ground as a sniper was trying to kill him for some unknown reason. He'd already killed another, a girl. And we were trying to figure out what he wanted, but Bryan was tired of hiding, so we used him as bait and he got shot at....

Then the unholy tones of daylight pulled me away....
and I became myself again. :)

Been Working So Hard

It's interesting to note the differences between Kikay and I.
Most recently its the differences between us making music videos.
You see. It takes her a couple of weeks to make one music video.
But within a 24hr period I made 3 different music videos.
All of which I will eventually post here. :)
I think the difference was....
I have the time to spend making videos and looking up clips in a day.
While Kikay has to juggle a lot more...particularly school and homework and work among other things, so she doesn't always have the time to sit down for hours on end and work through the music video to the end.
In some ways, it makes her videos way more thoughtful then mine as she has more time to think of all the pieces she wants to use and I just....find things in the moment and use them. :)

Why do I bring this up?
Well....I just finished making a 4th Music Video.
And I'm simply adoring it to pieces and everyone I show it too really likes it as well.

It's just one of those fun videos where I think I managed to match the subject and the song together really well. ^^;;

Needless to say I really can't wait for this movie to come out on dvd so I can get it! :)

Here it is:

Woot!

100 MPH

Sometimes, we aren't in control of our lives. The question is.....can we get away from the one in control and set out on our own and make our own choices?

As I collect my thoughts in this new assignment, they go to my peer group--the young men of the Church.
I think back just a few years when I was sixteen years old and a printing apprentice.
A fellow apprentice was totally engrossed in motorcycles.
In those days we rode British motorcycles, and he had an AJS-350.

One sunny summer's day, he said to me, "Would you like to come for a ride in my motorcycle?"
That seemed to be a good idea.
In those days we didn't wear any protective clothing, and, thus, very lightly clad, I became the passenger on his motorcycle.
He weaved through the streets of Norwich and then came to a long, straight road.
He leaned back and said to me, "Have you ever traveled at one hundred miles an hour?"

I said, "No."
He said, "Well, you're going to."
I said, "We don't have to."

He began to rev the motorcycle, and the motorcycle roared forward.
The skin on my face pulled tight, and the clothing blew as we went past ninety-eight to one hundred miles an hour.
I determined that day that never again would I let somebody else control my life.

A Habit of Threes

One.
Two.
Three.
Go.

One.
Two.
Three.
Go.

Sooo in work, I've been noticing that I tend to do things in rounds of three.
Like when filling up water bottles I will fill them up and empty them to rinse them out three times before putting a lid on them.
The same with the feeding dishes as well.
Basically anything I rinse off I'll make sure I do it three times.

I just kinda laugh at myself for noticing that I do that.

I guess I feel like if I do it three times then all the soapy residue should wash out by that third time.
So I'm good.

Perhaps that's why I'm entertained by Sheldon Cooper of the Big Bang Theory.
Because he knocks on doors three by three.
Knock knock knock _name_ knock knock knock _name_ knock knock knock _name_

I like him because I do that too...just not with knocking, though I've been tempted to copy him so many times. haha :)

This three times thing actually didn't start with work though.
I first noticed myself doing it in Ward Volley Ball when I would play with the Young Women.
I would bounce the ball three times before serving it.

I guess I just consider three to be a 'lucky' number of sorts. :)

Until you next read these words;
I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

The Dream

I was at work cleaning out the tanks, and using a bubble sort of telepathy I would hold the lizards in the bubble so the couldn't escape while I cleaned out everything. Afterwards I went through the market, to a specific cash register to try and put $25 dollars into the till but then I questioned what I was doing...as I knew that money was for tithing and not to but in the cash register. Plus there were all these tall guys in the parking lot of the church with wavy blonde hair and I was having a hard time talking to them without feeling rather silly.

Then the unholy tones of daylight pulled me away....
and I became myself again. :)

The Finger Painting Night

I think we have a new tradition in our apartment.
Every year... we do a roommate painting project. :)

You remember the post about the quote wall and how Kikay and I decided to move it to a different spot? Well that left us with a big empty white wall right by our entrance way.
Now...we couldn't just leave it like that.
I mean the rest of our apartment is so decorated that the emptiness is pretty obvious.
So in our talks Kikay, LaKai and myself ended up deciding that at some point we would have a finger painting night.
And fill up that wall with pictures. :)
So Sunday night.
LaKai decided that it was the night.
And so we painted.

lol.
I have to say, it was alot of fun, but compared to the others I feel like my pictures are a kindergarten painting compared to the others more...artistic images. :)
But I'll let you decide. :)

Up first. Our new roommate WiYen

She only had time to do this one image. But I really like it. lol :) It made me wish that I was doing a tree. haha. :)

Kikay did three amazing pictures. -I'm having her come next so her amazingness and my creativity aren't so easily compared. ;) haha.
Little Red Riding Hood

Rapunzel

And the Swan Princess

:) lol I love her theme that's going on here. :) Tis alot of fun and great to look at.
I really can't believe she did this just painting with her fingers.

Up next is LaKai :)

Hummingbirds and flowers :)

Some fantastic eyes. I came in today from work and the silver was really shining from the light coming in from the outside.
They're intense to stare at.
Hehe and with a bit of humor, we placed this picture right by the light switch. Soo if you're not paying attention, you might get a scare lol :)

and finally more flowers in the more abstract fashion. :) lol
LaKai actually started this painting first, but finished it later as she layered on a bunch of paint and needed to let it dry. :)

Now there's me.
:)
My thought process was "It's finger painting! That means you just put colors on the tips of your fingers and go at it creating as you go.
So my first painting which took a bit to do because the upper right corner was being a beast and not looking great....
Is this one:

LaKai said that it reminded her of a Dr. Seuss picture. heh :) lol
Personally I've called it "Island explosion."
:) I really liked using the bright colors and such,
but...compared to the others I feel this painting is a bit wild and....random.
I do like how the green 'palm tree' leaves turned out though ^^;;

Seeing what the others were doing, I toned down my painting skills and did this picture.
I actually tried to have a specific meaning for this picture.
Basically, I'm fondly remembering past pets. :)
Here's a closer up view of the three different animals :)

:) Yep :) Those are my pictures. :)
I had discovered doing my crazy Island Explosion.
That I really like scrapping away the paint from the canvas.
So that's what I did for my second one.
Layered on the white paint, mixed in a little color, and scraped away certain lines in to the animals I wanted to have. :)

All in all it was a lot of fun.
And alot of work to get all the paint of my fingers.
I had soo much white paint on me that when I peeled it off, the paint layer was white on one side and many different colors on the other side. :)

Until you next see these words;
I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

I was with Aubrey trying to calm her down as she was having a hard day. I was trying to do my best to cheer her up, but I don't know if it was working...

October 1991 General Conference Saturday Morning

Whew. Life just seems to get you really busy some days. But it always seems to go a bit easier after reading from conference talks. :)

Gordon B. Hinckley -Christ is the Light to All Mankind
  • Christ is the light to all mankind. He has "pointed, marked out and lighted the way. 'Sadly, many individuals and nations have extinguished that light. They have attempted to supplant His gospel with coercion and the sword.'"
M. Russell Ballard -The Family of the Prophet Joseph Smith
  • "There are those who profess to be Saints who are too apt to murmur, and find fault, when any advice is given, which comes in opposition to their feelings, even when they, themselves, ask for counsel; much more so when counsel is given unasked for, which does not agree with their notion of things; but brethren, we hope for better things from the most of you; we trust that you desire counsel, from time to time, and that you will cheerfully conform to it, whenever you receive it from a proper source."
Robert L. Backman -Jesus the Christ
  • "All other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages" to the testimony of Jesus--his death, burial, resurrection, and ascension into heaven.
  • The miracles of healing also show how the law of love is to deal with the actual facts of life. Miracles were and are a response to faith, and its best encouragement.
  • "Christ says, 'Give me All. I don't want so much of your time and so much of your money and so much of your work: I want You. I have not come to torment your natural self, but to kill it. No half-measures are any good. I don't want to cut off a branch here and a branch there, I want to have the whole tree down. ... Hand over the whole natural self, all the desires which you think innocent as well as the ones you think wicked--the whole outfit. I will give you a new self instead. In fact, I will give you Myself: my own will shall become yours.'"
Ted E. Brewerton -Light
  • Two types of light are physical light and spiritual light.
  • Physical light, especially natural light, affects the moods of people.
  • Light does have a profound effect on human mood and behavior. Mounting evidence indicates that people who are feeling a little down and need a lift can get it by going outside in daylight. Walking in the light is a natural mood booster. Many who simply walk for half an hour or more during the daylight hours receive a distinct benefit.
  • Researchers believe that these effects are traceable to light taken in through the eyes and not through the skin.
  • Shifting from these brief remarks about physical light, I should like to consider a kind of light that has infinitely greater power and effect. I speak of spiritual light.
  • This word light appears 535 times in the scriptures.
  • In the First Vision, light released the boy Joseph from oppressive darkness.
  • How does light enter into us? How do we receive it?  "But if  thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!"
  • Light persuades us to do good; it leads us to Christ.
  • We can be like a mirror and direct light even into dark places. We are not the sources of light; nevertheless, through us light can be reflected to others.
George I. Cannon -Today--A Day of Eternity
  • "Why so happy?" a grim-faced, scowling rider asked him.
  • The boy replied, "I've never lived this day before."
  • This is it, whether we are thrilled or disappointed, busy or bored! This is life, and it is passing."
  • You can lie to yourself, and you can lie to others, but you can never lie to the Lord.
  • Each day can be richer and more meaningful if we can be happy with ourselves.
  • Don't worry about those things which you cannot change. If something can be done, do it. If nothing can be done, don't worry about it.
Joseph B. Wirthlin -Fruits of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ
  • We can be so grateful for principle that provide positive, spiritual reinforcement for parental teachings and that direct young people away from the pitfalls that Satan has strewn along the path of adolescence and young adulthood.
  • We now know by scientific evidence what the Saints have known by revelation for 158 years.
  • Members of the Church have obviously been blessed with health and spirituality by being obedient to this commandment.
  • Welfare service "is not a program, but the essence of the gospel. It is the gospel in action.
  • The Church does substantial but perhaps little-known humanitarian work in many places in the world. Our ability to reach out to others is made possible only to the extent that we are self-reliant. When we are self-reliant, we will use material blessings we receive from God to take care of ourselves and our families and be in a position to help others.
  • None of us should expect others to provide for us that which we can provide for ourselves.
  • Of course, members of the Church have their share of faults and weaknesses, but we see abundant evidence that living the gospel does help the Saints to become better. As more people commit themselves to living the gospel with all their heart, might, mind, and strength, they will be examples to their families and friends.
  • Never be ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Howard W. Hunter -The Gospel --A Global Faith
  • In the message of the gospel, the entire human race is one family descended from a single God. All men and women have not only a physical lineage leading back to Adam and Eve, their first earthly parents, but also a spiritual heritage leading back to God the Eternal Father. Thus, all persons on earth are literally brothers and sisters in the family of God.
  • In the gospel view, no man is alien. No one is to be denied. There is no underlying excuse for smugness, arrogance, or pride. Openly scorning the pettiness and intolerance of rival religious groups.
  • Mormonism, so-called, is a world religion, not simply because its members are now found throughout the world, but chiefly because it has a comprehensive and inclusive message based upon the acceptance of all truth, restored to meet the needs of all mankind.
  • All men share an inheritance of divine light. God operates among his children in all nations, and those who seek God are entitled to further light and knowledge, regardless of thier race, nationality, or cultural traditions.
  • "[God] is using not only his covenant people, but other peoples as well, to consummate a work, stupendous, magnificent, and altogether too arduous for this little handful of Saints to accomplish by and of themselves. ...
  • Ours is a perennial religion based on eternal, saving truth. Its message of love and brotherhood is lodged in scripture and in the revelations of the Lord to his living prophet. It embraces all truth. It circumscribes all wisdom--all that God has revealed to man, and all that he will yet reveal.

I'll be watching the leaves.
