Colors of the Wind

Have you ever noticed that we're a society obsessed with colors?

In an Anthropology class I was once told something along the lines of. "The more colors you have in a civilization the more advanced it is" or something like that. We went off on the lines of like for people in...maybe it was....no I don't even want to guess what country it was....it was a 'poorer' country and they only recognized two or three colors. Greens and Reds I think. Hot and Cold colors. The 'poorer' countries don't judge things as much on colors. Things are wet, hot, cold, dry...etc.
But not here.
Colors.
African Americans are black, Europeans are white, Asians are yellow, somebody is red...why are they not known as Corn eaters? The Rice eaters? The fast food eaters? Why are we obsessed with colors? Why not obsessed with food? Or feet? Noses? The type of environment they live in? "Hi My name is .....and I'm a desert dweller." Oh really? My name is........ and I'm a mountain dweller. Maybe only Caucasians are obsessed with colors? Since they are 'white?' and therefore don't really have any colors? Though you could call Europeans 'pink' as well...

Why is it important when we meet someone, to find out what their favorite color is? What is the point? People who like the color red, don't usually flock with other red lovers, the same with blue, pink, aquamarine.
What makes a color attractive to a person, yet ugly for another? Is it back ground? Trying to be a rebel? Do your favorite colors shift depending on your mood? your stage in life? What you're going through? Do you have a set list of favorite colors?
For example my favorite colors are Red, Blue, Green and Purple...on the darker side of course, no bright colors. What does that say about me?
It doesn't say I'm a red person. Or a Blue person by liking those colors. Yet we have colorwheel personality tests to find out what 'your color' is. Reds, Yellows, Blues, Greens, Whites...
The best reason for having a favorite color is that its 'pleasing to you'

I bet colors play alot in the role of being attracted to someone.
Did your best friend wear your favorite color on the day you met? Is your favorite football team your favorite because of their colors?
But attraction.
Do your preferences for certain hair, eye, skin, colors make you more or less likely to talk to a person?
Why do some people find blue eyes more attractive then brown?
Why do some people like red heads over heads of black hair?

We are a race based on color. Just look at all the Crayola colors. Peach, White, Black, Red, Puce, Green, Blue, Aquamarine, Lavender, Ruby, Sapphire, Brown, Mud, Ice, Pear. Orange.
Why do we like to further complicate colors from their 'lights and darks?'

So....what is your favorite color? Do you have a reason for it being a favorite? Is it associated with good feelings, happy memories, favorite smells, or auras? Did it become your favorite color because of a good thing happening? I would have to guess then you would have a negative image/smell with a color that you don't like. Does your liking for certain colors say something about your personality? Is that why brides obsess about their wedding colors long before they meet their husband? They want to have the 'perfect' wedding colors to symbolize a 'perfect marriage?' Or at least symbolize good luck?

Why do different colors of flowers symbolize different types of relationships? Why are some colors considered more girly while others are boyish? What colors are never worn yet others have seen all the time?

Why do some people's favorite colors change from day to day? First its orange then red then green then purple then yellow then black then aquamarine then greenyellow, then pink, then back to orange.....Are they just not as color conscious? By not having a favorite color to spout off when one is asked what is your favorite color, have they somehow made themselves stand out? Is it another way to isolate a person? Or a way to include them? Is being color aware a good thing or a bad thing?

A Wind full of questions about color, yet when you try to grasp an answer......what do you come up with? A leaf that is green? Perhaps orange? Maybe its a cotton fluff ball. Why are we obsessed with colors? The world may never know.

Until you next see these words;
Enjoy the day!

  1. Being a fairly artistic person I can definitely appreciate color. :) I think color is similar to music- it has a sort of unknown power that we can all identify with but not really define. We know music is something incredibly favorable to God- and I think that color is likewise something very spiritual. It makes me think of the rainbow that represents God's promise to us after the Earth was flooded.

And as far as being attracted to color in people- it's probably true. I think certain men of all ethnicities can be handsome- but I've only really ever been very attracted to men of a darker color, usually with some kind of Hispanic background. Even if their skin is white, they usually have dark features. I only once went on a date with a Caucasian- and I obviously married someone darker (his heritage is from Spain and Trinidad) I just think dark skin/features looks so nice. I feel like maybe they are just more warm, strong, and to me- beautiful. My mom says I've always liked people with brown skin, and when she was pregnant with Ben I even requested that we "have a brown baby this time?" haha I don't know why really... Interesting thought.
