Trick or Treat

Happy Halloween Everyone!!

And in the Spirit of Halloween, I thought I'd share a memory of Trick or Treating.

It's probably one of my first memories of Trick or Treating.

I was young...how young? Not sure.
Young enough to be shy about talking to strangers that's for sure.
Young enough that I'm not sure if I had my siblings with me or not...I think Kikay  may have been there, but Meralto? Not sure.

In any case.
Our Daddoo had taken us to Grandma Dirchi's neighborhood to do some trick or treating.
And I remember there being this one house...which may have been a house on the corner a couple of blocks down from Grandma's.
Where the dude there refused to give you candy unless you said Trick or Treat.

And before this point...trick or treating had gone well.
I'd gone up to the doors...and hadn't needed to say anything in order to get candy. The adults would just plop it into my bucket/bag and off we'd go to the next one.

Yet here...here was a dude who was denying me the candy!
Not unless I spoke to him...said Trick or Treat.

Which, me being shy, was a big deal.

I mean...I feel like I nearly left without the candy, but Daddoo was like "just go say trick or treat."

It felt like an eternity standing there awkwardly on the porch.
Staring at that bowl of candy.
Wanting it.
But not wanting it if I had to speak.

But!
After another Eternity.
I finally mumbled. "trickortreat"
Finally got my candy.

And left.

lol. The night continued with more doors and more trick or treats, and possibly more of me having to say the words.

But whatever the case.
That particular memory has stuck with me. Funny how that works. lol.

Until you next read these words;
I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

October 2016 General Conference -Sunday Morning

Thomas S. Monson -The Perfect Path to Happiness
  • We are blessed to have the truth. We have a mandate to share the truth. Let us live the truth, that we might merit all that the Father has for us.
Russell M. Nelson -Joy and Spiritual Survival
  • Men are, that they might have joy.
  • Saints can be happy under every circumstance. We can feel joy even while having a bad day, a bad week, or even a bad year!
  • The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives.
  • Joy is powerful, and focusing on joy brings God's power into our lives.
Peter F. Meurs -The Sacrament Can Help Us Become Holy
  • Prelude music, reverently played, is nourishment for the spirit. It invites inspiration.
  • Music elevates our thoughts and feelings.
  • The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, [and] temperance.
Linda S. Reeves
  • When we have sinned, Satan often tries to convince us that the unselfish thing to do is to protect others from the devastation of the knowledge of our sins.
  • The truth, however, is that the unselfish and Christlike thing to do is to confess and repent.
  • However late you think you are, however many chances you think you have missed, however many mistakes you feel you have made, or however far from home and family and God you feel you have traveled, I testify that you have not traveled beyond the reach of divine love. It is not possible for you to sink lower than the infinite light of Christ's Atonement shines.
M. Russell Ballard -To Whom Shall We Go?
  • Our precious relationships with families, friends, the Lord, and His restored Church are among the things that matter most in life. Because these relationships are so important, they should be cherished, protected, and nurtured.
  • Focus on what you do believe and know.
  • Never abandon the great truths revealed through the Prophet Joseph Smith. Never stop reading, pondering, and applying the doctrine of Christ contained in the Book of Mormon.
  • We should not assume ... that just because something is unexplainable by us it is unexplainable.
  • Life can be like hikers ascending a steep and arduous trail. It is a natural and normal thing to occasionally pause on the path to catch our breath, to recalculate our bearings, and to reconsider our pace. Not everyone needs to pause on the path, but there is nothing wrong with doing so when your circumstances require.
  • Sometimes we can learn, study, and know, and sometimes we have to believe, trust, and hope.
  • I don't pretend to know why faith to believe comes easier for some than for others. I'm just so grateful to know that the answers are always there, and if we seek them--really seek with real intent and with full purpose of a prayerful heart--we will eventually find the answers to our questions as we continue on the gospel path.
  • We must never neglect any of our brothers and sisters. We are all at different places on the path, and we need to minister to one another accordingly.
  • Please know that even though great storms of wind and waves beat upon the old ship, the Savior is on board and is able to rebuke the storm with His command "Peace, be still." Until then, we must not fear, and we must have unwavering faith and know that "even the wind and the sea obey him."
Dean M. Davies -The Blessings of Worship
  • Every day, but especially on the Sabbath day, we have the extraordinary opportunity to experience the wonder and awe of heaven and offer our praises to God for His blessed goodness and overwhelming mercy.
  • When we worship in spirit, we invite light and truth into our souls, which strengthens our faith.
  • It is impossible to say that we love God while at the same time hating, dismissing, or disregarding others around us.
  • Spiritual experiences have less to do with what is happening around us and everything to do with what is happening within our hearts.
Lynn G. Robbins -The Righteous Judge
  • The Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them.
  • Compassion doesn't nullify the need for discipline.
  • Without sacrifice, a person may find it hard to forgive himself or herself, because of a lingering consciousness of something withheld.
  • Unkind things are not usually said under the inspiration of the Lord. The Spirit of the Lord is a spirit of kindness; it is a spirit of patience; it is a spirit of charity and love and forbearance and long suffering.
  • Kindness is the power that God has given us to unlock hard hearts and subdue stubborn souls.
  • The way you see [a child] is the way you treat them, and the way you treat them is [who] they [will] become.]
  • Never let a problem to be solved become more important than a person to be loved.
Henry B. Eyring -Gratitude on the Sabbath Day
  • Simple service for the Lord mattered in the lives of Heavenly Father's children.
  • Just as we sometimes cannot see the results of our own service given on the Sabbath, we may not be able to see the cumulative effects of other servants of the Lord. But the Lord is building His kingdom quietly through his faithful and humble servants, with little fanfare, toward its glorious millennial future. It takes the Holy Spirit to see the growing grandeur.

Midday Energy Nightmare

I've said this before, and I know I'll say it again, because I say it every single Saturday in my journal.
But I hate working the midday shift at work on a Saturday.

Literally it's my least favorite shift ever.
Why?
Because it's 8 full hours of straight customer service.
And I am not a social butterfly. I can't do 8 hours of customer service and not die at the end of the night.
I hate that I have to spend my entire day at work.
I get in just before the lunch rush, and then stay until an hour before close.
And it's horrible.
Just stupidly horrible.
I can't do anything before, I can't really do anything after.

The midday shift is a shift from the devil because honestly. Who wants to spend the ENTIRE DAY at work?
Not. Me.

I much prefer the morning shifts where I get off at a reasonable hour and I can still do stuff after work without feeling tired.

Saturday shifts?
No, I get home from work and basically die.
Which sucks.
Because I want to be able to write.
And I can't write when I'm so fatigued from having to interact with people that I can't think straight.

Honestly...I hope as this year draws to a close, there will be another switch up in scheduling. So that I can get away from this midday shift and actually feel like I have a bit of a weekend to go and play.
*exhales*
Fingers crossed.

Until you next read these words;
I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

A Different Lighting

Alright.
Last adventure in Red Rock Country I'm going to tell.
....For now. ^^;; lol.

So on the last day of our trip, before we headed home, we drove into Arches National Park to go hike Delicate Arch.

It's usually a tradition with the family to go on this hike at Sunset and watch the colors of the arch change as the sun sets for the day. We then like to hike back to the car in the dark, after all the other people have gone away.

But this time around...I kinda wanted to see the Arch under a different lighting. When the sun was in a different part of the sky, when the shadows were different.

-A factor into wanting to go at a different time was that the park actually closes early right now, just before sunset hits. -This is due to the park's roads being under construction this entire year and they close the park at night so construction crews could work without dealing with tourists.

In any case.
I decided that it would be fun to hike Delicate Arch in the morning. Before we headed home.

And surprisingly....it was a lot busier than I expected it to be for a weekday morning. I thought the crowds would be less present...you know because it was a) morning, b) a week day and c) the prettier pictures are at sunset...so....I thought more people would be there at sunset rather than almost lunch time. *shakes head*

Who knows lol
What I do know is that it was a constant stream of people two and from Delicate Arch that morning. Like a never ending line of ants really.

In any case.
The crowds weren't totally crazy at the Arch itself. We were still able to sit in our favorite spots and not have anyone sitting around us.

And it was so...well....different to see the Arch.
Because I'm used to the sun shining on Delicate Arch when you face it.
But going up in the morning...the front of the arch was actually in shadow.
Very weird. lol.
Still pretty.
But weird.

However! That meant that the back of the arch actually had the sun shining on it!
So I was able to take pictures of the back of the arch with it in sunshine instead of shadow like I've only been able to see it from before.
And that was really pretty!!! :D

BUT!!
The craziest thing about going up to Delicate Arch in the morning?

There. Was. No. Wind.

Like literally, Delicate Arch is synonymous with Windy. You wear a jacket up there no matter the weather, you expect to be blown away up there. Because Delicate Arch stands on the edge of a bowl. And that particular portion of the park seems to draw the wind to it.
It's a rare thing to experience no wind up at Delicate Arch.

And this was one of those days.
We would get a little bit of a breeze, but nothing drastic. It was barely noticeable.
It was just....not windy.
And it felt so nice!
To be able to sit and enjoy the arch, feel the heat of the sun, and not be fighting against the chill breeze trying to blow you away.

It was great!

I didn't want to leave lol.
But leave we did...because we had to head back home.

It was a great way to end the trip. ^^ Loved it.
Can't wait to go back.

Until you next see these words;
I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

A Triumphant Return

It's always interesting to revisit places that you haven't been to since you were a child.
Because it's weird to see what's completely the same as you remember it. And what is completely different or you totally forgot about.

This past weekend I had one of those opportunities.
Where I finally. FINALLY got to return to the Marching Men/Tower Arch hike in Arches National Park.

Honestly, I think the last time I was there was like....in Jr. High, if not in Elementary.
Because it's been ages since we've been back.

Seriously, I feel like we only went on this hike a couple of times...
But it may have happened more when I was younger younger.

In any case.
The Tower Arch/Marching Men hike in Arches is a less common hike for us to visit because often it was a choice between doing this hike or the Double O/Dark Angel loop.
And the latter was more 'fun' and less 'tiring' than the former.

So when push came to shove....Dark Angel it was!! lol.

It's not like we haven't tried to return before now.
It's just been that factors outside of our control...well have controlled our ability to return.
Whether it was the weather, or timing, or temperatures or what...
We just never got around to returning to this hike.
Though about every other time we'd go to Arches...I would express an interest in going out to that hike.

The main problem is that Tower Arch...
Is it's off the main road.
You have to take a dirt road to get to it.
A road that can be impassible if the weather's been bad.

Which is nice If you want to avoid the people.
Because seriously, you could go out there and be the only ones there the entire day.

-At least that's how I remember it lol.
I remember only encountering maybe one or two other groups on the trail when I was younger.
And even this past weekend it wasn't that much different.
For a holiday weekend, Tower Arch still remained mostly deserted. There were like 6 cars in the parking lot instead of the usual one or two...but not enough to make a difference really.

But because of that distance and the inconsistency in how many people make it out...
Was also part of the reason why the last time my family and I ventured down to Arches....we chose not to go.
It had been in the plan like two years ago when me, my brother and my daddoo went.
To go hike that trail.
But at the last minute Dad had a 'don't go there feeling.'
Which ended up being a good thing that we didn't go...
because our car ended up breaking down....and breaking down at Tower Arch would have been way worse than breaking down in Canyonlands. :S

In any case.
Back on topic.
This past weekend we finally made it to Tower Arch!
The weather was perfect. (no soul-sucking heat to drain our energy away)
Very little people.
And yah...a nice clear dusty dirt road lol.

I really couldn't believe it when we actually made it to the parking lot leading to the hike.
I was like. O.O this is really happening.
It's really happening!!!

And like I said....I haven't been on this trail in at least ten years, if not longer. Not since before High School I'm pretty confident in saying.

So to be standing at the beginning of the trail, looking up a path that was so familiar yet so unfamiliar at the same time.
Was exhilarating.
Climbing, hiking.
It was awesome.
It was cool too to see landmarks and go "Oh I remember that!"
Like there's this wall of redrocks right...red rock cliffs with jagged top. And I totally remember me and my siblings calling those landmarks 'castles' and we each had our own 'castle' in that valley.
lol Kikay didn't remember that at all.

And then there's other things that I vaguely remember.
Like the mountain of sand we had to climb.
Like. ()_() I remember it...but I don't at the same time.... but gah. Even now it was exhausting.

Still totally worth it though.
To walk by Marching Men, to turn the corner and see Tower Arch right there!
Just ahh....
Guys I love this place.
Seriously I love Arches.

But the craziest thing about the Tower Arch Hike?
Was how SHORT it was.
Seriously it's like...a two mile round trip? It was So. Very. Short.

And this is crazy because I always think of Tower Arch as being this "Long and Arduous Hike."
Seriously, even though I just barely hiked the thing I still equate it to being as long of a hike as the Double O/ Dark Angel loop and that's like a 7 mile journey....made even longer if you take the side trails to other arches as well lol.

But nope.
It's probably about the same distance from the parking lot to Tower Arch as it is from the parking lot to Delicate Arch.

So. Very. Weird.
Yet at the same time very understandable.
I mean...if I last hiked it when I was a kid...then I was younger, shorter...
which meant that my little legs needed to cross more of a distance lol.

So it could have seemed longer. Especially if we were hiking under the blistering sun, especially making our way up that mountain of sand.

It's so different hiking it as an adult.
So very different.
Pretty easy too.
Honestly, I don't know why I don't make the effort to come out to Tower Arch more often.
Because that place was nearly deserted.

Like...it's funny I wonder if there's some sort of magicky thing there.
Because as we were approaching the arch....another group was leaving.
And we had the arch to ourselves for like 45 minutes it felt like. No people at all.
We were just able to sit and relax and bask in the mighty size of Tower Arch.
But when we left....
We encountered a group of people just coming.

It's like it was an assembly line. Where people could come and leave and enjoy the arch on their own with no others before they'd leave and more people would come.
Totally crazy. lol

And oddly enough....
Tower Arch was where I got my only injury of the trip.
Where I'd been stepping off a small fin, to the ground below to get to the arch in front of me....
And suddenly I was on my knees.

It was the weirdest thing.
I stepped down...my foot twisted...and there I was, on hands and knees with an aching ankle.
I have no idea what happened. It wasn't like it was uncertain footing or anything. The ground was literally flat where I'd put my foot.
But for whatever reason, my ankle twisted and I went down.
*shakes head*
Even my family was surprised lol. I'm known as the mountain goat in my family. I don't fall. So we were all surprised when I did. lol
Ankle still kinda hurts even a week later lol.

But otherwise. I was fine.
So weird though.
I think Tower Arch is just a weird place.
Still amazing to go to though. ^^

Golden Windows

One weekday afternoon as we girls pulled our needles up and down through the fabric, our teacher told us the story of a girl who lived on a hill on one side of a valley.
Each late afternoon she noticed on the hill on the opposite side of the valley a house that had shining, golden windows.
Her own home was small and somewhat shabby, and the girl dreamed of living in that beautiful house with windows of gold.

One day the girl was given permission to ride her bike across the valley.
She eagerly rode until she reached the house with the golden windows that she had admired for so long.
But when she dismounted from her bike, she saw that the house was abandoned and dilapidated, with tall weeds in the yard and windows that were plain and dirty.
Sadly, the girl turned her face toward home.
To her surprise, she saw a house with shining, golden windows on the hill across the valley and soon realized it was her very own home!

The Black Arch Adventure

It's no secret that I love hiking in Red Rock country. Specifically Arches National Park.
Because ARCHES!!!
Like. Seriously, I'm obsessed with them.
And I love the energy of the red rocks so. Like...I get totally hyper there and it's an amazing feeling! I can just hike and hike for hours upon hours and it's amazing!!

I really wish I could go down there more than once or twice a year.
Seriously, if I could afford it I'd be down like every other weekend lol.

In any case.
This past weekend I was able to go to my favorite place on Earth for a mini getaway from Happy Valley.

And while I wanted to hike my favorite trails.
I also had another goal in mind.

A goal to see a specific arch up close.

An arch that I'd only seen from a view point like...my entire life.

Which arch is this?

It's called Black Arch.

And my entire life growing up, I've only ever seen it from the view point.

As you see, Black Arch is located in the Devil's Garden area of the Park.
Along the Landscape Arch/ Double O Arch hike.

And you can only see it, from the top of a fin in a very specific location.
Looking down into the valley below.

And what does it look like?
A black shadow on the red rock wall.

Like...that's seriously what it looks like, Honestly, if you weren't told it was an arch, you wouldn't think it's an arch.

In any case.

The Double O arch trail can be completed as a Up and Down thing....or you can make it into a loop.
As there is a primitive trail option that takes you down into the valley and around it, and then up the other side. It's primitive because it's a lot of sand and a bit of scrambling over rocks and such.

But oh so pretty!

And for years now, I've wondered how to find Black Arch from that primitive trail.

Because it had to be possible.
We would be on the same level from it.
Not on top of the sandstone fins/cliffs looking down to it.

And I had a general idea from a handy dandy googlemap I found.
That listed a bunch of arches within the park and showed their locations.

So I knew that it was just up a valley.
I could see the primitive trail and follow it.
So I knew that the arch was there somewhere.

But the last time I went to Arches and went Arch crazy....
We decided to skip that particular adventure to find it.

This time however.
That was the main goal.
We would hike the primitive loop and find Black Arch!!

And...interestingly enough when I clicked on the map link again.
To refresh my memory on Black Arches location.
The map had been updated.

To now show the path of the Primitive Trail and label it as such.
Which allowed me to see more clearly how the path moves.
And where Black Arch was in relation to that trail.

So when we got to that part of the path.
It would be easy to know we were at that part.
And go venture off into the wilderness to find it.

But you know what the crazy thing is about Black Arch?

I've walked that trail like a hundred times. (okay a bit of  exaggeration, but it's ALOT)

And when we finally found Black Arch.

IT WAS SO CLOSE THE ENTIRE TIME!!

Like.
LITERALLY
You come to a section of the trail where you Turn Right.
AND IF YOU TURN LEFT
and wander around ONE FIN

THE ARCH IS RIGHT THERE!!!

AHHHHHH!!!!!!

All these years and we've literally Walked. Right. By. It!!!

Seriously.
All these years and we could stare straight at the arch from the primitive trail and NOT REALIZE IT.

-Mostly because you can't see the arch itself from the trail, but you can see the rock fin it's located in, and when the lighting is just right, see the shadows cast.

BUT IT WAS RIGHT THERE.
IT WAS SOOOO CLOSEEEEEE

SO VERY CLOSE

AND ONLY NOW WE FOUND IT.

AHHHHH!!!!!!

Seriously guys.
It's crazy.
So crazy how an arch can be there almost literally in plain sight.
And until you see it, been to it, know it's location.
You are completely blind to it being there!!

There are soooo many arches like that in the park.
Arches where you won't know they're there unless you walk by at the right time of day when the light is shining just right to bring out the arch from the surrounding landscape and highlight it.

Agh.
It was Right. There.

And can I say that Black Arch is amazing up close?
It has such a good feel to it.
And it's located in such a spot where you can walk on both sides of the arch.

If you go behind the arch, you end up in a little shady green gully below the arch, where the walls are black. (hence it's name)
And in front of the arch, well you can walk right underneath it and bask in the sunlight and the valley right in front of the arch was SOOOO PRETTY!

Like Guys.
This arch is now a top favorite arch.
It's soo amazing.
And I'm so happy I found it!!

I can't wait to go back and visit it again sometime soon. ^^;;

Less Crowded

So this past weekend I went down to my favorite Red Rock country to finally take in some red rock energy and hike my feet off. lol.

And it was great!!!
For being a supposedly 'busy weekend' Arches National Park actually wasn't that crazy for the most part. It was definitely less crowded than I expected it to be. Because well...it was UEA weekend. Things always go crazy on long weekends.

But I think that the fact that there were a couple other events happening at the same time in the area helped to lessen the crowds.

Which was great.
Because me, I don't like crowds.

I prefer hiking in mostly silence (I admit I have my moments of being chatty), and enjoy listening to the nature around me.

And that's really hard to do if you have a pair of gabbygabbies walking right behind you or right in front of you talking the entire time. It kinda just leaves me...semi-stressed out. Because did I want to hear your conversation? No. No I did not. I want to hear the nature.

It's also really stressful when you get those sort of people that just kinda...zing you the wrong way. Their energy just...feels wrong and you don't want to be near them.

Or those people who never want to leave your side....like you keep yo-yoing with them.

Which we'd stop to let the people behind us pass and get their energy away from us...only for them to stop a little ways further on...which would mean we'd pass them again and have to either keep walking faster to get away from them (which often meant they would walk faster too) or else we'd have to stop and wait for them to pass us. (sooo frustrating.)

So the fact that we barely encountered it this past weekend...
Was simply amazing.

I loved the feel of leaving the 'cacophony' behind.
It often happened that we'd have to walk through the 'buzzing bees' in the easier parts of the hike, but when we turned to different more difficult trails...the silence was almost instantaneous.
It was great. ^^

So happy that I made it down there this year. ^^ So. Very. Happy.

Reading

Yuri, a Russian Latter-day Saint, sacrificed and saved to take a long trip to the temple.
On the train he noticed a beautiful woman with a bright countenance, and he felt that he should share the gospel with her.
Not knowing what else to do, he began reading from his Book of Mormon, hoping she might notice.

Yuri didn't realize that the woman, Mariya, was already a Latter-day Saint.
Not knowing that Yuri too was a member, and following a prompting she had to share the gospel with him, Mariya began reading in her Book of Mormon as well, hoping that he might notice.

Well, w hen they simultaneously looked up, Yuri and Mariya were astonished to see the Book of Mormon in each other's hands--and yes, after falling in love, they were sealed in the temple.
Today, Yuri and Mariya Kutepov of Voronezh, Russia, as eternal companions, contribute significantly to the growth of the Church in Russia

Holed Up

I've been holed up in my room for the past three days.
Why?
Because I've been writing.
And it's been awesome!!! :D lol

Having the time and the energy and the focus to actually just get a story out?

It's been more than thrilling lol.

Because more often than not, when I get home from work...I'm both physically and mentally exhausted.
And it gets rather difficult to pull up enough focus to well...think.
Because writing takes ALOT of thinking.
A lot of rephrases, editing, additions, etc.

Especially because the stories in your head never end up quite the same on paper.

Scenes you thought would be quick and easy...end up taking up four chapters.
Ideas on how a scene will go get tossed out as a character takes things in a totally different direction.

Then of course, there's the worry of how the scene is reading, is there enough detail, are the characters acting in character, do I even need this part?

It's sooo time consuming lol.
I can spend like an entire day on a single chapter.

*shrugs* Mostly because my writing speed is currently at like one page in an hour....if I'm lucky lol.
(I'll get faster the more I do this. *fingers crossed*)

Still.
The feeling of accomplishment.
When I get to the end of the chapter.
When I get the story to an end point in general.

Is so thrilling.
Exhilarating.

I'm so grateful I have this week off of work.
Because writing like this.
Ah.
It's been a struggle.
But it's been the best thing ever!!

A Speedy Catchup

So a couple of Christmases ago.
A friend of mine gave me an awesome gift.
In a Flash themed jacket.
Which is a black jacket with the flash logo on it lol.
It's one of my favorite articles of clothing to wear.
And because it's finally getting cool enough again.
I've been wearing it around.

And Sunday night, when I had to go be social and bring treats to Ward Prayer.
I decided to wear my Flash Jacket.
Not thinking anything of it really.

But surprisingly, I had like three different guys ask me, while I was there, if that was a Flash Jacket and if I watched the show The Flash.

Which....
I've watched it. And loved it.
But due to becoming obsessed with Detective Conan around this same time of year last year...I had dropped watching the Flash a handful of episodes into the third season.
That didn't mean I was completely clueless to what had happened later in the season. lol. Social Media does to tend to spoil things if you're not careful.
Which I wasn't. It was a good way to get the highlights of the episode without me having to sit down and watch it.
So I was totally aware of major events that happened throughout the season.
And even into this season.
As the first episode of season 4 of the Flash aired last week.
So I already had some glimpses into what had happened even though I hadn't seen the episode itself.

Which meant that....even though I hadn't seen the episode.
I was able to throw in my two bits into the conversation.
And was prepared to not think anything more on it.

Until it was suggested that perhaps we should get together each week to watch the Flash. :S

That...wasn't good.
As I hadn't seen most of season 3.

So I begged off on the idea of meeting up this week. (tonight)
And basically as soon as I got home from the ward prayer activity, I got onto Netflix and started watching Season 3.
Because by golly. If these guys were going to be talking to me about the Flash from here on out.
I better know what's been happening!

lol. So I spent the rest of that night and basically all day yesterday bingewatching Season 3.
And caught up!
Woot!

*sighs*
Honestly guys.
Why did I stop watching that show?
It was soooo good!!
I loved it. It was such a...fun thing to do. To just invest myself into the world of superheroes.

Really. I missed that show.
I hope that I'll be able to keep up with it this season. Because seriously. I love the Flash.

Picking Up the Slack

I've probably said it before.
And I'll probably say it again.
But I don't like group work.
I prefer to work with myself because I know what I can and can't do.
Working in groups....it means that you have to rely on others, depend on others to get their part done.
And many times...it doesn't work out. Things fall apart, things don't happen.

So being on a committee.....
Yah, not my favorite thing.
I don't like meetings, I don't like planning. I don't like the dithering that happens as the group tries to decide on a point of focus.

In any case.
During the committee meeting, we were talking about doing this birthday celebratory thing.
Where we'd meet up once each month and celebrate people's birthdays in the ward.

Which, truth be told...wasn't quite fond of this idea.
Because people move in and out of the neighborhood all the time. It's nearly impossible to keep track of who is still in the ward and who's left.
Plus...there are already other groups that are already doing birthday celebratory shoutout thingies.
So adding one more to the mix...not so much what I wanted to do.

Still, the group wanted to do it.
Wanted to try and do a birthday get together thingy.

So the idea was once a month to hold a celebration. A party. Bring treats to a location.

Tonight was one of those days.
Where we were to team up with our Ward Prayer group and bring the treats to it, so that people with birthdays in October would come to ward prayer and then celebrate the birthday thing.

I'd talked with that committee (since I used to be on it.) Agreed on a date. And two of my committee volunteered to make the treats.

So Friday.
I texted my group.
To make sure we were still on for treats and such.

Unsurprisingly....
The people who volunteered to bring/make treats...suddenly couldn't make it.
Which meant. I was asked to pick up the slack. Grab the treats.

lol. They wanted me to bake a cake.
....Yah, Never made a cake myself. No way I was doing that.
I just dropped by the store after work and grabbed some cookies and cupcakes.
*shakes head*

That was exactly why I had texted the group a couple of days ago.
To give myself time to come up with another plan if it wasn't going to work out.
Instead of finding out last second and having to scramble for a viable fall back.

Yay me for thinking ahead.
As I was able to drop by the store after work and grab some treats -cookies and cupcakes-

And bring them to the thing tonight.

Which in of itself has its own stress.
I don't like social situations when I don't know what to prepare for.
Ward Prayer could have four people or it could have forty.
It could last 15 minutes or two hours.

The unknown variables are stressful to me.
So being put in charge of bringing treats to it.
Definitely stressful.
*exhales*

Thankfully.
I always think it's going to be worse than it usually is.
So tonight went off well.
Not a ton of people.
Not a lot of stress.
Actually talked to people without it being awkward. So yay for positive social interaction.
Maybe it will convince me to come out and go to these ward things more often. ;) lol. Maybe.

At least the treats got eaten.
I talked to people.
Not a big deal.

*exhales* Yay for that stressor being less stressful.
Yay for positive situations. ^^;;

I'll be watching the leaves.

A New BreakRoom

It's amazing the crazy that can happen in one day when you're not at work.

So I walked into work this morning, and clocked in.
Only to be greeted by one of my coworkers who was like "Have you seen the new breakroom?!"
And I was like. O.o Huh?

Because one...new breakroom? Like...did we get a new one built? Did I mishear? How could we have a 'new' breakroom when I'd only been away from work for one day! I mean Thursday the breakroom had been normal, but now it's 'new?'

Turns out I didn't mishear.
Apparently during our last major DM visit when our DM has brought a training DM into the store. The Trainee had commented that our breakroom looked....well sad. Unwelcoming. Uninviting.
And so the DM was like "Make your break room more inviting."

Which....it's a break room....at work....in a pet store. Why in the world does it need to be inviting? You're just going in there to escape from people.  *shakes head*

In any case.
Apparently yesterday our Head Manager came in.
And did just that.

He repainted the entire room -so now it's a bright shiny white.
And then moved things around.
And bought some carpet
As well as some reclining lawn chairs. ---I don't know how else to describe them, but they're those types of chairs where you just relax in them at like a beach or a porch or something.

So it's been totally disorienting.
lol.
I kinda felt like I walked into a twilight zone.
*shakes head*

In any case.
The one benefit to the new chairs...
Is that it's semi-easier to relax in them.
And so I chose them to hang out in.
-Mostly because my swivel desk chairs I usually sit in in that room were missing and the cold metal chairs are hardly inviting.

I didn't think much about the spot I chose to relax in.
I mean. I did my usual break thing of scrolling through some internet tabs for a lil bit and then curling up to take a nap.
Because being social throughout work is draining and so I use my breaks to regain a little bit of energy.

I didn't think much of it.

Until the head manager asked me over the our walkie-talkie radio things....if I had taken my nap on them. Or if I had chosen to sit in the old metal chairs.
To which I was like. "Yah, sat in the new ones. They could use some pillows."

lol....well...if no one else knew I took naps at work...everyone who had a radio now does lol.

In any case.
Apparently half of the reason my manager chose the chairs he did, was so that people could relax in them, and yes. Take a nap lol.
"Isn't it better than curling up in a ball on the desk chair?"

lol. Semi better.
At least the deskchair had soft padding lol.
But the lawnchairs definitely have more room to them.

I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

'Scuse Me

It's always for the most random reasons that strangers decide to start talking to me.
You know, when I'm not at work, because strangers randomly decide to talk to me all the time there. ;) lol.

No, today I was out doing a quick bit of grocery shopping to grab a few items for the dinner my roomie was making tonight.
And I paused by the gift cards kiosk to check them out to see if there was anything there I could get for a friend.

But standing there in front of the section I wanted to look at was a guy.
Blocking like the entire thing as he too peered at the gift cards.

And unfortunately for me, the gift card I thought I could use....was right where he was standing.
So I was like "Excuse me." As I reached in front of him to grab the gift card I thought I wanted, looking more closely at it to ensure that it was indeed what I wanted.
To which the guy was like "Oh sorry."
And I was like. "You're good."

But then the guy continued to try and talk to me.
"That's a gift card! You use it to give to people as gifts. Not the best thing but it works."
"Mhmmm." ...I ignored him. Because a) I already know what they are thank you very much. and b) The person in mind I don't know as well, so going for a gift card because, hey, they can buy what they want to buy.
"You must be new around here." He tried again.
I shook my head, still focused on the gift card. "I'm not actually."
"Oh, you're from happy valley?"
"Yah." I mean, I live here currently, but I grew up a couple valleys over.
"Do you go to the college?"
"Used to."
"Houston?" He repeated. "Oh, Used to. You used to go to college."
I looked up then, giving him my customer service smile. "Yep. I graduated."
"Oh. Cool. I'm in my second year myself."
"That's cool!" I replied with my customer service voice, returning my attention to the gift card.

lol.
He left soon after to talk to someone else. Not sure if it was family or strangers, but he left me alone.

*shakes head*
Such a weird encounter.
I have the most random weird encounters with people.
*shakes head*

The Seat Belt Moment

When our oldest daughter, Jen, brought her third daughter home from the hospital, I went to her home to help.
After getting her oldest daughter off to school, we decided that what Jen needed most was rest.
So the best help I could give was to take her daughter Chloe home with me so her mom and new baby sister could have some quiet time.

I buckled Chloe into her car seat, secured my own seat belt, and drove out of their driveway.
However, before we reached the end of the street, Chloe had unbuckled her seat belt and was standing up, looking over my shoulder, and talking to me!
I pulled the car over to the side of the road, got out, and buckled her back into her seat.

We started again but had gone only a short distance when she was out of her seat again.
I repeated the same steps, but this time before I could even get back into the car and fasten my own seat belt, Chloe was already standing up!

I found myself sitting in a car, parked on the side of the road, having a power struggle with a three-year-old.
And she was winning!

I used every idea I could think of to convince her that remaining fastened in her car seat was a good idea.
She was not convinced!
I finally decided to try the if/then approach.

I said, "Chloe, if you will stay buckled in your car seat, then as soon as we get to Grandma's house, we can play with play dough."

No response.

"Chloe, if you will stay buckled in your seat, then we can make bread when we get to Grandma's house."

No response.

I tried again.
"Chloe, if you will stay buckled in your seat, then we can stop at the market for a treat!"

After three attempts, I realized this was a futile exercise.
She was determined, and no amount of if/then was enough to convince her to remain fastened in her seat.

We couldn't spend the day sitting on the edge of the road, but I wanted to be obedient to the law, and it wasn't safe to drive with Chloe standing up.
I offered a silent prayer and heard the Spirit whisper, "Teach her."

I turned to face her and pulled my seat belt away from my body so she could see it.
I said, "Chloe, I am wearing this seat belt because it will protect me.
But you aren't wearing your seat belt, and you won't be safe.
And I will be so sad if you get hurt."

She looked at me; I could almost see the wheels turning in her little mind as I waited anxiously for her response.
Finally, her big blue eyes brightened, and she said, "Grandma, you want me to wear my seat belt because you love me!"

The Spirit filled the car as I expressed my love for this precious little girl.
I didn't want to lose that feeling, but I knew I had an opportunity, so I got out and secured her in her car seat.
Then I asked, "Chloe, will you please stay in your car seat?"
And she did--al the way to the market for a treat!
And she stayed buckled all the way from the market to my home, where we made bread and played with play dough because Chloe did not forget!

As I drove back onto the road that day, a scripture filled my mind: "if ye love me, keep my commandments."
We have rules to teach, guide, and protect children.
Why?
Because of the great love we have for them.
But until Chloe understood that my desire for her to remain securely fastened in her car seat was because of my love for her, she was unwilling to submit to what she considered a restriction.
She felt her seat belt limited her freedom.

Like Chloe, we can choose to see commandments as limitations.
We may feel at times that God's laws restrict our personal freedom, take from us our agency, and limit our growth.
But as we seek for greater understanding, as we allow our Father to teach us, we will begin to see that His laws are a manifestation of His love for us and obedience to His laws is an expression of our love for him.

Am I a Fish?

It happened a couple of years ago.
I was at work, helping a customer out, with fish I believe, when they told me of an experience they had had after surgery.
They'd been taken home to their room, where one of their kid's had bought them a nice big fish tank. (like 50 gallons) for the customer to look at/watch while they recovered from that surgery. -Because it's relaxing really.

But when the customer had woken up, still kinda out of it due to the drugs they were on, the first thing they saw was that fish tank.
There was no one else in the room.
And their brain was like. "Oh no. I died in the surgery and became a fish!"

The customer told me they thought that for like three hours. That they'd become a fish. Why? Because it was a while before anyone decided to check in on the customer and tell them differently.

It was a different sort of customer experience for sure.
Something I hadn't really heard of happening before, and I thought it was an interesting concept.

Around the same time.
It just so happened that I'd recently been to a Studio C thingy, or watched something/saw something.
Where one of the cast said that they actually liked being told ideas for sketches for them to perform. It didn't mean that they would always use the ideas, but they did like people telling them ideas.
Which was something I kinda was like "Oh cool, I wish I could tell them something."

Sometime after the customer event....whether it was a few days, a couple weeks, or even months later I have no idea...
But I was at work.
And what do you know, one of the Studio C cast members came into the store.
Why?
To buy food for their dog.

It's not the first time I've seen members of the cast at work.
A member of the cast actually came in to return a cat that our adoption group had agreed to let them borrow for a sketch they were working on. (Did they ever make a video out of this sketch, I have no idea.)

But I saw this Studio C cast member.
And remembered what they'd said about being open to being told ideas.

And so I shyly approached them, and was like. "You're from Studio C right? I have an idea for a sketch." And I proceeded to say something like. "What if a person wakes up from surgery and the first thing they see is a fish tank full of fish and they think that they died and became a fish?"

I thing the guy (Jeremy) might have been like. "Huh, that's a cool idea." or something like that.

But...nothing really came of it. I kinda figured that it had been forgotten. lol.
But hey I tried.

And time passed.

And a couple of days ago, on my facebook timehop thingy. My post about the customer experience popped up. And so I shared it again, because really it's one of those unique interactions you don't always get at work. lol.

Only for one of my friends to comment saying something like "Funny, Studio C just posted a sketch about this scenario!"
And I was like ()_() WHAT?!?!

I go to check it out.
And guess what?
Yah.

They finally used my idea for a sketch!!
WHAT?!?!?!?!
lol cue excited squealing and jumping around in excitement.
Like...they remembered it? They created a sketch for it? They remembered it?! WHAT?!

Definitely made my night lol. :)

Here's the video of the sketch for any of you interested in checking it out. It's called "Am I a Fish?"

Just Pick One Already

It was one of those shifts where I kept getting pulled away from my task of cleaning the hamster/guinea pig cages in order to help customers.
Which meant that the task...had been drawn out way longer than it should have been.
But finally. FINALLY I was nearing the end.
Which was great because I was scheduled a short shift today and I only had about five minutes to put everything back into the cages before I was off.

The small pet habitats has three sides. 18 cages total.
So I rushed all the food/water/homes/wheels etc over to the cages and quickly started putting everything back so that I would be able to finish and get out on time.

And then.
Like it tends to do.
A customer came up to me.
Needing help.

"I have a couple of questions." she said. Though she was giving off the energy that bespoke more than a 'couple' of questions. She kinda had that 'needy' feel to her, where I could sense that this may be...quite the trip.

I was right.

*shakes head* Why is it usually the cat owners that end up being the most difficult customers?? That and the fish customers on occasion. *shakes head*

In any case.
The woman originally needed my help because the specific can of cat food she buys for her cat wasn't on the shelf.
I did manage to find some of the same flavor in smaller cans, but she really wanted the larger cans. So I went into the back to see if I could find some there. No dice.
Which meant that hopefully it would be on tomorrows truck. *fingers crossed*
So if she would call tomorrow, we'd probably have it all worked and would know if we got any cans in on the shelf for her to come in and get. (As it really depends on when we get low/run out of a product as to when it's automatically replenished, so it might not even be on tomorrow's truck.)

I figured that would be that. I couldn't find the food she wanted in the size she wanted, but at least she had it in a smaller version.

But no.

You see this woman has a special cat.
Special in that it's old. -16 years old- and that it's had recent issues with it's anal glands -in that one swelled and burst-
And she believed it was the diet she'd been feeding her kitty originally, and so she'd switched to a different brand of dry food, only for the dry food to give her cat diarrhea, so she'd switched to yet a different brand of dry food, and had gone for a specific brand of wet food -different from the dry food- --the cans she couldn't find on the shelf today-- because that was the only thing that helped her cat seem to improve. Because she believed that particular can of wet food helped the cat out with the digestive issues she'd been having. And once that food seemed to be helping, she went to that dry food of a newer brand in our store. And that was helping too... as it contained within it probiotics to help out her kitty.

But it all boiled down to...the fact that the hard food she was feeding her cat...was just meant for Adult cats.
While there are brands of food meant for "Mature" cats. Which usually means 7 years or older, in some brands it's 11 years or older. And since her cat was 16...she wanted to feed her a food made more for her cat's needs.

Only problem? It couldn't be just any food for mature adults.
It had to be a food that had specific key words listed in the ingredients. A food with the right percentage of fiber and fat. A food that didn't have wheat as the second ingredient, or really any grains listed as the second ingredient. It had to be a food that contained probiotics, that was grain free.

And it seemed like every brand of food I'd try to show her...she'd find a reason why she didn't like it. Sometimes the reason was as simple as "I don't feel like I should get this one."

It even involved a trip over to our 'health' section to check out some digestive treats, and salmon oil things for her to try before we wandered back over to the food.

Because no matter what I showed her. She would still return to the brand of food that was for 'adult cats' that she was currently feeding her kitty.
But she didn't want to hear that "perhaps you should just stick with that one."
-Because really...if it's not hurting the cat, why change what's working?
But she wouldn't hear it.
She kept dithering between other brands.
Specifically one where she was like "I fed this to my cat for a while, but she didn't like it."
So I showed her a different option for mature cats in that same brand.

And finally.
After much dithering about it.
She finally decided to get it.
One more trip over to the health section for cats was involved to grab the salmon oil.

And finally.
Finally.
I was free of her.

45 freaking minutes later.

Keep in mind that this lady had found me basically right as my shift was ending.

And I had ended up spending an extra 45 minutes trying to get her to settle on a cat food for her to give her cat.

*exhales*

Technically like ten minutes into the process of helping her I could have transferred her over to a different coworker.
As our handy dandy new walkie-talkies allowed instant communication so they knew I was still with a customer and offered to take over.

But I decided not to.
For multiple reasons.
One...because since I was technically supposed to be off, I wasn't needed on the floor. Two. If this customer was going to take forever...then that meant a lot of other people that potentially couldn't have been helped because this woman had a tenacious hold on my attention and would not give it up willingly I could tell.
-I actually had to call my coworker over to help a different customer who had been hovering nearby for a couple of minutes also needing help. So my coworker was able to easily help them.

But mostly I didn't give this customer over to my coworker because she seemed like the sort that was easily overwhelmed. -considering she dithered for so long...it's not that hard to believe.
And if another coworker stepped in, they might tell her different things than I'd been telling her. (because we all have personal opinions, knowledge, experiences that influence what we tell customers.) I didn't want to have my coworker tell her something that would set everything back to point A again.

*exhales* Maybe I should have just let them bite that bullet.
But hey.
In the end, I got the customer to buy things she was basically satisfied with.

....I never did finish putting things back in the hamster cages though.

Until you next see these words;
I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!
