The End of a Decade

Everyone's been doing this decade of reflection where they look at what's been accomplished in the past ten years. How things were then...how things are now.

And it's been interesting to see how things have changed for others.
To see who's gotten married, had kids, bought a house, become famous, gone to exotic places...etc.

And like....
It's one of those moments where I'm left....not sure what I've accomplished.
Which is a rather dour way to look at the last ten years.

So....here's some positives?
- I graduated College! Woot! Bachelors. Yes!
- I've been on multiple cruises and visited places outside of the United States! Woot!
- I've moved like...four times? From my original college years apartment, to the great and spacious building to the dark caves to my current place.
- I got a job! lol and Who would expect that seven years later I would still be working at a Pet Store and loving it enough to stick around? Certainly not me. I thought I'd only be there for like six months...and now it's seven years later. ^^;;
- I bought the giant fishtank I've always dreamed about buying! Woot!
- I've spent the last year....adjusting to life without Mother Dearest. But at the same time have strenghtened so many family bonds and friendships that wouldn't have been strengthened otherwise and I'm so happy to have those friendships and closeness in my life.

And the big one.

I've been writing!!
:D lol
I mean in this past year alone I've managed to write 22 stories of various lengths after starting a goal in 2018 to write a story every month and post it.
So happy I'm keeping with it and I've been enjoying my progress made there! ^^;;

So yah....
I mean there's things that I haven't yet accomplished....mostly in the 'get married and have a family department.' but hopefully this next decade of life will see that change.

We'll see though.

But yah.
There's a small decade glance?

I hope you all have a Happy New Year!!
Thanks so much for coming to visit my blog!

I'll be watching the leaves.

Saying The Wrong Thing

It was a rather rough night tonight.

As I had the 'fun' time of dealing with the darker side of tumblr.
You know the little monster that rears its head whenever you say something remotely noncomformative.

In this case.
I had an Anon, or maybe it was more than one Anon.
Get on my case after my reponse to being asked to do something on tumblr was a No.

I refused to acquiesce to a request.
And some random person in internet land decided to come after me for it.

*exhales*
Like the Ask didn't even involve this random person.
They just decided to take offense on behalf of another and like...pick a fight.

A fight that they apparently want to make me into the bad guy for.

Which is weird.
Because like...I'm by no means perfect.
But I am often described as sweet and innocent and nice.

So to be made out as a condescending villain was....interesting to say the least.
Especially since apparently that's all I am to this particular person on the internet.

It doesn't matter what I say to defend my side of the situation or to express my pov on why and how I am setting certain boundaries and why I said No.

And they're dead set on me staying the bad guy.

*exhales*

Like I get that I can't make everyone happy. It's a fact of life. Someone will always find some fault with you.

But like....why? Why paint me as this dark figure when you don't even know me? When there's dozens of people coming out in my defense saying otherwise.
Are you so deep into your own pit of your own making to be willing to back out and say 'oh sorry I over reacted there?'

Apparently so.

*exhales*
So yah. The year is ending on a rather...meh note for that.
Hopefully tomorrow involves less drama and more fun and positive and hope and such.

Until you next read these words;
I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

A Useful Gift

One of the fun things about giving gifts to others.
Is when you notice something that you think another person will need.

And then when you give it to them and they just kinda make this surprised face of like 'how did you know I needed this?!"

It's a great feeling really. To give the unexpected but needed and have it be well received.

It's what I did to one of my roomies this year.

As I'd noticed that there was quite the gap between her door and the floor and that she would constantly place blankets in front of the door to block out the light or keep in the heat among other reasons.

And since roomie had moved up into Kikay's old room.
I knew that Kikay had had some sort of door protector thing that she'd used to block that gap so she could keep her room warmer in the winter.

So I figured that I could find something online.

Which yep! It took finding the right keywords.
But I found a nice little door blocker thingymajig that slides onto the bottom of the door so both sides of the door have a barrier and you can open and close it without worrying about dislodging the door blocker.

So you can muffle sounds, block light, keep in/out the heat/cold.

It's great.

And my roomie was so surprised that I'd noticed such a thing as that.
That she was constantly using her blankets to block that gap.
And that I'd gone ahead and found a solution for her.

She was rather touched.
And it was great seeing her immediately put it together and stick it on her door and try it out. XD
It's great to see your gifts getting used. ^^;

She loves it.
And I'm glad she does. :D

Though...i do have an ulterior motive for getting her this particular gift.

We usually leave a light on upstairs to make it easier to navigate...
But since roomie has moved to the top floor...she has this habit of turning off the light because it would shine underneath her door and make it so she couldn't sleep.

So to solve the problem. Door blocker thing!
Therefore the rest of us roomies can have our night light again, and she can have her darkness. ^^;;
I think it's a win win really.

Yay for successful gifts!! :D

Until you next see these words;
I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

Her Ring

As a kid one of my favorite things to do would be to wear my Mother Dearest's wedding ring.
Occasionally my Daddoo's too.

Most of the time this occurrence happened in the middle of church during Sacrament when I was bored and looking for something to entertain myself with.

And I loved looking at the ring on my finger and wondering when it would actually fit me.

Lol it still doesn't fit me...well not on my ring finger, that one's still too small. Mother Dearest's wedding ring usually works best on my middle finger.

In any case.

Mother Dearest ended up with two wedding rings.

Because she ended up losing the first one and couldn't find it.
So she got a second ring, this time with the birthstones of her children on it as well.

Only for the first ring to turn up like...idk...it was probably a few years later? As the first ring had been missing for a while....
but it turned out in the corner of a closet randomly enough.
And we only found it because we were basically deep cleaning out that particular closet. Moving everything out and such.

So she ended up with two wedding rings.

Which was pretty good all things considering since she had two daughters.
So when the time was right, she could foreseeablely pass down one ring to each daughter when the time was right.

Whether just as a family heirloom or for us to use as our own wedding rings....who knows. I guess it's up to us?

But yah....
In any case.

This year....
For Christmas.

Daddoo gave Kikay and I Mother Dearest's wedding rings as one of our Christmas Presents.

Our Brother wasn't left out of this, he ended up with her "Mother's Ring" which also looks like a wedding ring as it has a diamond in the center and the kid's birthstones laid to the side of it.

I'm thinking that that ring was probably created after Mother Dearest was done having kids, but before she lost her original ring.

But yah.
I'm glad Meralto got one of Mother Dearest's rings as well. As I think he appreciates getting something from her that she wore.

And for me and Kikay?

Well. I'd always been more partial to Mother Dearest's original ring. So I received that one, while Kikay got her second one.

And like....

It's just....idk....a bittersweet feeling.

To have that ring.
To put it on my finger.
And just....you know....remember.
Remember all the times I tried it on when I was little.
Remember all the times I saw Mother Dearest wearing it.

Honestly, I never expected to receive it so soon.
It was always in that nebulous future.
That 'some day' which seems like it's centuries away from happening.

Or like...
I expected to receive it on a more special occasion.
Like for my wedding or something.

But since me getting married isn't happening anytime in the foreseeable future...

Yah...

Like I said.
It's bittersweet.
I love the wedding ring.
And I'm grateful to have it.

But now...I'm not sure what to do with it.
Like it's not the sort of ring that you wear on your finger for everyday things.

But it's not something that I just want to.....lock away in a safe and never see again.

But I have to do something with it.
As i can't just...you know...leave it out and about.

*exhales*
So yah, my mind's been racing on what to do with my Mother Dearest's Wedding ring now that it's been given to me.

I'm thinking maybe creating some sort of shadowbox?? Placing the ring and some other things of Mother Dearest's inside it and just...placing it somewhere where I can see it?

Like it's a fun thought....
Just not sure if I can pull it off.
Or if it's what I actually want.

Still.
Mother Dearest's wedding ring.

Until you next read these words;
I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

Babies!

So earlier in the week. Like the Friday or Saturday before the Christmas madness.

We ended up having these two large orandas come in our fish shipment.
Which isn't surprising since we have a tank specifically for the selling of said fish.

And when I worked that Saturday I'd noticed that the Orandas were hanging out rather close to each other and that there were these white dots around them.

Which I was like "maybe those are eggs." but with how many customers there were that day, I didn't think much more on it.

Besides being kinda sad when I came in for my next shift and saw that both of them were gone.
Which yay we sold them!! Because we don't usually sell the larger Orandas as quickly because they're like $33 each.

But woot anyways!

However.
This morning.
I happened to look in the empty tank.
And saw movement there.
Tiny little movements.

FRY!!

The goldfish eggs had hatched and there were like a gazillion baby fish swimming around the tank.

!!!!

I mean, I've seen baby goldfish fry before.
As one time a goldfish came into our store with a bunch of baby fish already in with it.

But that was years ago.

I haven't really seen them since.

So I was beyond excited to see the little fry swimming around.
As I love Oranda goldfish and I would love to see these little ones grow up and such.

But in such a large tank...with the possibility of us getting more large orandas in on the fish truck today (which actually didn't arrive so foo) we couldn't just keep the babies in that tank.

And I, conviently, at home, still had my iso tank set up.
So I was like "Well it's still up and running.....I'm going to take some of these babies home!!"

I probably scooped out a good 300 or so of the babies to take with me.

But I couldn't get every single one so there were probably still a good 200 if not more still left in the tank when I decided I'd grabbed enough of them.

I had to do a little bit of shuffling though because in the iso tank I had a silver dollar that was being aggressive to my fish, so I had to fish him out and put him in a different tank but I had to fish out the fish from that tank to put into my larger tank so I could put the silver dollar in the smaller tank so I could then put the baby goldfish in the isolation tank I had.

Ah!
I'm so excited!
Because like. Baby fish!
I want to see them grow up and get bigger and gain color and such.

Though understandably I know not all of them will survive, babies aren't always the easiest to take care of.
But I'm looking forward to seeing how far I can get.

*fingers crossed* that I end up with some survivors!! :D

Puttin It Away

It was one of those days at work where I decided that for my own sanity and stress levels, I wouldn't worry about doing the bedding change.

-Which considering we barely have any animals in the store to sell...I figured wouldn't be that big of a deal.
Especially because I couldn't do yesterday's bedding change since we aren't open Christmas, and I only did a partial bedding change on Tuesday for Christmas Eve since we expected to have a lot of customers (which we did) coming in to get that last minute christmas gift.
And today's bedding change was Bird's so like....they can be skipped for a week if needed without the cages looking too bad.

I elected to forgo the bedding change mostly because I didn't want to stress about trying to get everything done before the end of my shift it happened to get super busy since a lot of people come in the day after Christmas to get pets as well.

We were busy. Not crazy busy. But busy enough to confirm that it was a good thing that I didn't try and do cages as well as help customers out.

So instead, in the lulls that we had, I worked to help the stockers out as since it's after Christmas that means we have to remove all the christmas goodies from the front of the store where they've been stationed for the past couple of months and place them in the 'reduce to clear' sections of the store.

Since everything else in the department was done, I elected on my own, to help them out.

As there was a shipper in the middle aisle filled with cages for hamsters and tanks for fish along with some accessories for them.

And since Christmas Eve practically wiped us out of many of the items on the shelves, I simply moved those products in the center aisle back to their spots on the shelves in my department and then moved the more christmas themed ones to locations where they could still be seen, but also be out of the way.

The manager was rather thankful I took the time to do that as he was busy trying to get the larger doggy christmas themed gifts into their new locations with the help of the stockers.
so being able to cross one of his many to dos on his to do list was great for him. :D lol.

Yay for being able to help out.
It's something I enjoy doing. ^^;;

I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

It Keeps Changing

There's always that concept of nothing changes.
Traditions will always remain the same traditions.
Even though you know there's this 'nebulous' change that will happen as you get older.
As your siblings get married.
As they have their own kids.

Traditions have to change and alter to adjust for the new family dynamics forming.

But it's always seemed like this sort of event was always in the nebulous future.
Somewhere sometime distant...things would alter.
But not yet.
Not this year.

However.
It was this year.

As our tradition was usually to open christmas presents first thing in the morning.
Like 6 or 7 am we'd be up and ready to open presents starting with the stockings and such.

But this year.
Since both my siblings have inlaws to visit.
That ended up changing.

My siblings went to see the in laws first. And open presents there first.
Which meant that Daddoo and I would have to wait until they were done in order to open presents from everyone.

It was kinda weird to start opening presents at like...1130.
And to not get done until like 1pm.

It feels like the day ended far sooner than it should have because of that lol.
Because we weren't opening presents as early in the day.

I mean the past handful of years we'd been opening presents in the later morning. Like around 8 or 9 instead of 6ish.

But still.
Weird to start presents so late in the morning.
Especially when you see so many people already done lol.

However, I can see how that will become the norm really.
A glimpse into the future.

Where the siblings and I are all married, with our own kids.
And celebrating Christmas with our spouses and kids first.
Then heading off to Daddoo's home in the afternoon or evening to exchange gifts and open them there.

It's weird to think.
I mean it's just been our core family for so long.
That it's weird to realize that soon enough we'll be meeting at Daddoo's for the evening instead of the morning.
That we'll only be hanging out for a little bit instead of the entire day.
That we'll have our own family traditions starting with our own spouse and kids.

It's weird.
So weird to think about.

Until you next see these words;
I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

Shifting Traditions

Christmas Eve Dinner.

For a long while that particular tradition was basically going out to Sizzler to eat and celebrate as a family.
Occasionally we'd venture out to different places to eat.
But since it's easier and less messy to go get food instead of make it, it's been a tradition to just go out to eat.

But apparently, Daddoo hasn't really liked that tradition --even though he was one of the ones to bring up that yay no messes to clean up--
So this year wanted to do an actual Christmas Eve Dinner.
You know with the cooking of the ham (why is it always ham??) and the mashed potatoes and salad and rolls etc.
The whole dinner shebang.

Of course it was slightly different this year in that we went to Grandma's Home to have the dinner at.
-Though since we usually do Thanksgiving dinner there and we didn't this year---maybe it was just the tradition of having bigger meals at Grandma's home....

In any case.

It was rather different, but fun to have Christmas Eve dinner away from the hustle and bustle and chatter of a bunch of strangers sitting nearby.
I mean...I don't like ham that isn't like...thinly sliced sandwich meat... but overall the dinner was great. The company awesome and plus we got presents from Grandma! Woot!! lol.

*exhales*
It's definitely a year of changing traditions though.
Which makes sense.
Since the family is changing it's dynamic it makes sense that one has to adjust in order to still have the family bonding time that is the main reason for celebrating the holidays.

Still though...as a fan of our old traditions....it's not always easy to shift to new ones.

However, there is still one tradition that we keep going.
lol my brother, his wife, and I all got together to watch Jim Carrey's How the Grinch Stole Christmas which has been a tradition to watch on Christmas Eve since the movie basically came out.

So I'm glad we were able to keep that particular tradition alive this year. :D

Timber

I think I may have accidentally killed a hamster today. *exhales*

I mean...there's always the chance it had died before....
But pretty sure I accidentally killed it.

Which isn't the best mood setter right before Christmas.

But I'd been grabbing our cages in the back that had animals that could come out onto the floor.
As the weekend had emptied us enough of our hamsters that I could then bring out all the animals in our back rooms as well to come out onto the floor.

And the cages, admittedly, hadn't been stacked the most stablely as I was in a hurry....

So when I went to move the cart.
The motion was enough to topple two of the three cages down to the ground with a large BANG.

The mice went spilling everywhere, but thankfully the cage of hamsters had managed to not fall out of their cage. So I quickly righted that one and went to go catch the mice.

But when I got out onto the floor with the cages -much more stablely stacked this time.

And went to put the hamsters in their cage...

I discovered one laying flat and motionless at the bottom of the cage.

The body was still warm and very limp....

so while the hamster may have died before I dropped the cage.....

I'm guessing that the tumble to the ground and the loud BANG scared the poor thing to death.
*exhales*
I waited a little bit just to be sure he wasn't just in shock.
But nope.
The poor thing had died. Y_Y

Not the best way to start the week. Y_Y

I'll be watching the leaves.

Finding A Seat

Having church the Sunday before Christmas is never quite what I expect.

Like honestly it does depend on the year.
But most of the time, in the singles wards, we end up combining one or two wards, or else the entire stake into one session.
And we just do like the first hour of church.
Have the sacrament. Sing a lot of songs. Etc.

This year they decided to combine the stake together so a bunch of wards would come together since the singles wards ends up being rather small during the holiday season as many people travel home to go see family for the holiday.

So normally there aren't too many of us.

This year though...
I think they underestimated as my roomie and I arrived like right at 11 when church started....
To find the place was filled and more people kept coming. :S

Some years the bishop in charge has everyone scoot in closer so that people can actually see where there are seats.
but that didn't happen this year.

So me and my roomie were left trying to figure out who was saving and if there were two spots together.

Thankfully she spotted a guy friend from her previous ward who scooted over to give us room so we were able to go sit down.

And there was another girl neither one of us knew who also indicated we could come sit by her.
which is where we were heading until y roomie spotted her friend.

which was good in a way
because there were two other girls near us who ended up getting the spots the one girl had indicated were empty.

So we four were able to get seats!!

Woot!
But yah. They definitely didn't plan well for that. We'll see if next Sunday is just as packed.

Until you next read these words;
I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

The Saturday Before Christmas

Ah.
The Saturday before Christmas.

It's always a more crazy day in retail land.
Because of course that's when all the shoppers decide to come out.

It was even busier for us at the pet store though.
Because not only is it the last saturday before Christmas.
But we also had a dog adoption group come in.
And we also had Santa Claus in for a few hours to take pictures with everyone's pets.

In any case.
It was crazy busy.
Like busier than black friday busy.

My manager tells me we barely missed making more money today than we did on Black Friday.
Which means.
It was crazy busy lol.

We had three registers going like nearly the entire day it felt like.

And the lines?
*shakes head*
The lines were never ending.
It was just one customer after another after another after another.

My department fared slightly better.
But was still crazy in it's own right because having Christmas on Wednesday has thrown off all our animal shipments.
And the cold weather has delayed our reptile shipments.

So like....I have no last minute shipments of animals coming in.
No right before Christmas creatures to bring out.

What we have in the store is what we have.

Which is bad because we were basically already out of reptiles.
And I didn't get in my reptile shipment I was expecting to.

Soooo for all pet parents wanting to get a reptile for their kid.....
They're probably going to be out of luck at least at our store.
Just because we literally have like....nothing.
And we're going to still probably have nothing until after Christmas.
Because I doubt we're going to get a shipment in before christmas at this point.

*exhales*

That was poor planning on everyone's part really.

But it's hard to predict which animals will be 'the pet' to get this year. As it's never consistent.
Some years it's bearded dragons.
Other years it's fish.
And other years it's guinea pigs.

This year...it's been pretty even across the board.
Though I think we've received more calls about Hermit Crabs, Snakes and Bearded Dragons compared to the others.

So yah.
busy busy busy busy day.

*shakes head*

I expect it will stay busy for us for the next three days as well before christmas as all the last minute shoppers come in to...well shop.

Until you next see these words;
I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

I'm Awake Now

I had one of those dreams where you wake up feeling more stressed than when you went to bed.
Yes it was a school related dream because those are always stressful lol.

In any case.
To try and like...calm myself down and relax enough to possibly go back to sleep.
I got up to grab some water from the bathroom sink. Cus cool water helps everything lol.

And I was to the state of 'yes i will go back to bed'
When I went to leave the bathroom.
and right there by the handle of the bathroom door.
Was this creepy big spider!!

Like GAH.

WHERE DID YOU EVEN COME FROM?!
I had walked right by it when I came into the room and didn't even see it until I was getting ready to leave.

So yah.
Nice little heart attack there because like, I could have accidentally brushed it. :S Gah.

Needless to say.
That spider got an early morning trip out into the cold darkness of the early morning air.
As I managed to catch it and toss it outside.

Hopefully he found a warm spot to hang out.
But yah.
No hanging out where I am okay spider?

*shakes head*

Christmas Animal Crazy

Holidays can often throw off the shipping of our animals.
Usually it's just bug shipments that are the most affected because they come in bi-weekly and so if there's a holiday....usually the shipments end up getting delayed a day or so.

With our Small Pets and Birds....usually only Thanksgiving and Christmas cause major changes on when they're sent to us.

Since next week is Christmas.
I needed to know when our shipment would be coming in so I could have cages prepared next week for when the shipment showed up.

Since Christmas is on a Wednesday this year.
And our Shipments usually show up on Thursdays.
I wasn't sure how much Christmas would affect us.

Like. Would they come in on Monday like they did for Thanksgiving?

Nope.

When I asked the dude he gave the surprising news that he wouldn't be coming into the store until Sunday.
Aka. The sunday AFTER Christmas.

Usually we get in a last shipment of animals before Christmas to you know...prepare for all the people who want to buy pets at the last minute.

But apparently the shipment I got in today...is the last shipment before Christmas.
Which makes sense since Christmas is only like...six days away. :S

And we can't bring out the animals for a couple of days anyways because we watch them for a bit to make sure that they're healthy before bringing them out onto the floor.

But that definitely means that....I'm expecting to have many an unhappy customer come in on Monday and Tuesday.
Because I expect Saturday to be super busy and will wipe us out.
-Though it's hard to predict just what will and won't sell each year.

It's not going to be fun.
Plus I will have to deal with after Christmas customers too.
Who want to come in the day after christmas to get their pets for their kids.

And I won't have any new pets available until January 1st. :S
Yikes.

So weird.
So crazy to think it's going to be so much time before we get in another shipment.

Until you next see these words;
I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

A Leak?

I don't know how well known of a fact this is.
But I get more irritated and frazzled when I'm trying to accomplish a task...and then I keep getting delayed in completing the task because I keep getting pulled away from it. *exhales*

Today was one of those days.
Where the day started out in control...and then slowly spiraled out of control.

It was towards the end of my shift, as I was frantically trying to at least finish cleaning the cages I was supposed to be cleaning before I was off. As I knew I couldn't get all the decorations back into the cages. Not in ten minutes.

Which is frustrating.
When I know I can get the bedding change done by basically lunchtime....if I'm not interrupted.

And interrupted I was. Constantly.

In any case.

As I was frantically trying to finish cleaning cages.

My coworker and manager were messing around with the aquatic plant tank.
Coworker trying to organize it so that manager could count all the plants and make sure our inventory was accurate.

Which is hard because there's two new plants in there that look very similar to each other.
And I haven't yet managed to be there when we get the plants in so I have no idea how to tell which one from the other one because I've yet to see them come in labeled.

I'd just finished telling them twice over the radio that I didn't know how to tell the difference between those plants.

When my manager came over the radio yet again, but this time they were asking for me to come over to the tank because it was experiencing a 'critical failure' aka it's leaking.

O_o???
A critical failure?
For tanks that have been there probably longer than I've been alive?
Doubtful.
But I came over to investigate.

And sure enough.
Underneath the tank, dripping onto the bags of gravel we sell below that tank.
Large droplets of water were indeed falling.

My coworker, and two of my managers were staring at these dripping drops trying to figure out where on the bottom of the tank the water was coming from.

I was skeptical it was coming from the bottom as whatever my coworkers had been doing to organize the tank, couldn't be crazy enough to suddenly make it leak.

So I looked to the tank itself and noticed that the water level was high.
Extremely high.
Like overflowing high.

Only no one had noticed that it was overflowing because the water wasn't dripping down the front.
But instead, it was dropping down the side of the tank, in the crack between that tank and the tank next to it.

Hence why they didn't see the problem.

I did though.
Overflowing tank meant that something was blocked.
Aka. The basket was blocked.
Which is the device that protects the hole where the water flows out of the tank and into the pipes behind it to go to our big filter system in the back.

Considering the fact that my coworker had been moving plants around to try and organize them, I'm not surprised little strands got loose and blocked the basket.

So I acted quickly and unscrewed the basket from the tank to allow more water to flow out into the pipes.

And right away, the water levels went down and the leak stopped.

I cleared the basket. Made sure nothing was blocking the hole.
And walla.
The tank was back to normal.

Tada!!

*shakes head*

Sometimes I wonder what my coworkers would do without me there.
Because like....I do wonder how long it would have taken them to realize what the actual issue to the tank was and what solution they would have taken to get the water to stop dripping.

I probably would have run to shut off the system that way water isn't continuing to flow into the tank and we could better isolate the issue.

Thankfully we didn't have to do that.
As the tank is fine.
So Yay!

Go Do The Thing

I don't understand what goes on in my coworkers heads sometimes.

Like...what they're thinking when they do the things they do.

Today for example.

I was winding down on the opening tasks.

Where we basically just had to put back the rest of the fish ornaments we'd taken out to clean, feed the fish, and then do the betta water changes.

-Plus technically we needed to bag crickets, but it was late enough in the day where I was like...we probably didn't need to do that.

In any case.
I wasn't doing any of the above listed tasks.
As I was focusing on putting away a couple shipments of things because I definitely didn't trust new people to do that task and the coworker replacing me for the day is the newest of our associates in the department.

So I was doing that task.

And told this coworker about the other three tasks that needed to be done. Ornaments, Feeding Fish, and Betta Water Changes.

And my coworker was like "Oh I don't know how to do betta water changes! I've never done them without someone. Can you show me?"

And I was like "Sure...but I need to finish this first so you can go put back ornaments or feed the fish---"

But the coworker was like "Okay! I'll wait until you're done then then we can do it together!"
And like.
Walked away.

Without doing either task I said that they could do in the meantime.

*exhales*

Like....this has happened before with other coworkers.
Where I tell them what still needs to be done and then they go "Okay" and don't do them.

Like I wasn't telling you what still needed to be done for funsies.
I was telling you so you could go do one of the tasks.

But this coworker focused on like the one task they didn't know how to do and apparently decided that since they can't do that one they can't do any of them?
I don't know the logic there.

I'll have to make a mental note for next time to tell them directly "Hey can you go do this for me." So they know that I mean for them to go do the task.

Yah...we'll see how that goes.

Until you next see these words;
I'll be watching the leaves.

Chubby

So a few weeks ago we had two mice adopted out at our store because a customer pointed out that they were female and that one was pregnant.
And after the manager took the pregnant mouse over to the vet to confirm...indeed adopted out both female mice.

Though truthfully.
I was rather skeptical that the mice were girls let alone pregnant.
Because again, we only carry boys.
And I'm pretty sure all the mice were boys in the store.

But since I wasn't there there's no way to verify really.

However.
Today.
I came into work to discover that one of our hamsters had been isolated.
Why?
Because it was a girl and pregnant.

This discovery was made after I'd left work on Saturday.

So I knew nothing about it until I came into work this morning.

And me.
I was very skeptical.

Like okay.
It does happen on occasion that we do get in females when we only get in males.
But like this occurrence is rare.
Like maybe once a year if not once every other year rare.

So to have two different rodents both turn out to be girls within like a month of each other?

Oh yah.
I was skeptical.

Especially when I pulled open the cage the hamster had been isolated in.
And saw that this particular hamster was one of our 'long term resident' ones.
Aka. We've had this particular hamster in the store for MONTHS.
Like at least six months I feel like.
Because he was white and the white hamsters don't sell as well.

But I've placed this hamster, along with his buddy, in with multiple other hamsters over the months as they overall do okay being placed with other short haired syrians.

So the likely hood of this hamster being a girl AND pregnant....was rather low. Because like...wouldn't the hamster have already had babies by this point? I mean this hamster has been placed in with a good dozen or so other hamsters over the months and NOT ONCE did babies result in that.

So I carefully picked up the hamster to see it's bottom.

And it looked like a boy.

But to double check.
I looked at another hamster that had been isolated as well for a different reason.
And the bottoms looked exactly the same.

A quick confirmation with a manager.
As well as a google search of how to tell boy and girl hamsters apart.
Confirmed that this hamster was indeed a boy.

*rolls eyes*
He's just a really chubby boy.

So I placed him back on the floor with his buddies because there's no concern about him having babies at all.

But I also ended up printing an image detailing exactly how you can tell the genders apart in boy and girl rodents.

Because I can't afford to have my coworkers all thinking that we're getting in females and adopting them out only to have them later confirmed to be male.

So yah.
That's fun.
And I get to spend the next few days making sure each and every one of my coworkers sees it.

But now that leaves me rather skeptical about the mice that we adopted out. Even more so than i was before.

My guess is they were actually boys.

But we probably won't know unless the guy who adopted them comes back to confirm that they're boys.

At least I managed to confirm the hamster was a boy before it got adopted or something.

I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

Work Issues

Ended up getting slightly stressed out today as not one but two of my managers ended up texting me work related questions/problems.

The first manager's question was if our fancy leopard geckos that had come in this weeks reptile shipment were actually dead.

Which I was like O_o???
Because as far as I'd been aware they'd come in alive.
But at the same time I had noticed that we still only had two fancies and I would have expected there to be more since we were expecting more.
But I'd figured that we'd ended up selling one.

Plus I hadn't been the one to put the shipment out as I'd been busy doing something else. But my coworker at the time hadn't mentioned that any of the reptiles were dead.

So I had my manager send me a picture of the PO and sure enough my coworker had written DOA (dead on arrival) next to the fancy leopard geckos.

Which O.o???
If they were dead...why was it not brought to my attention?
Who knows.

But now it has me wondering/worrying if the leopard geckos only appeared to be dead but were actually alive.
Because like if the shipment came in cold...then they could appear deceased when in fact they weren't.

But since the shipment was from like...four days ago....there's no way of knowing. Though I'll probably end up asking my coworker when I see them next what happened with them.

But yah.
That was stressful.

And then in the evening a different manager texted me to tell me that some of our hamsters had come down with wettail.
Which isn't surprising as it's a more stressful time of year and the animals are slighly more overcrowded.

But still annoying to deal with.
Especially because apparently it was our longhaired syrians that were suffering from the problem?
As from what I can remember they were doing alright...
But I won't know for sure what all is up until I go into work tomorrow morning.

It could have been my coworkers panicking for no reason.
As sometimes hamsters just have bad days too.
But yah...I'll have to double check and make sure they actually are sick when I go in tomorrow.

So yay.
Stress.

I'll be watching the leaves.

Fishing Out The Troublemaker

So a while ago, I bought a jacobfreibergi cichlid to put in my 125 gallon tank as....well an experiment of sorts.
Since my tank is so big, I can get away with putting together fish that don't usually belong together because there's enough space for everyone to basically get along.

So I decided to try putting on a cichlid just to see how he would do.
And I'd bought a baby one that was being picked on by the others in his tank.
In hopes that he'd grow up to play nice with the others.

*exhales*

But as expected but hoped against.
As he got bigger...he got more aggressive.

Nipping at fishes fins.
And possibly killing other smaller fish though I don't know that for sure.
My smaller fish just vanished.

In any case.
My cichlid was becoming more and more aggressive.
Particularly to my red tailed shark that I had in the tank as well.
As he would chase that fish all over.

But problem though...
Was that the cichlid is smart.
And learned quickly to hide underneath my decorations when I got near with a net so that I wouldn't be able to catch him unless I decided to take my tank apart.

Which I was already thinking I would need to do anyways to get him out.
Because if I wanted to get any more fish, especially smaller ones...he would need to get out.

But I didn't really have a place to put him if I was able to catch him.
As I couldn't put him in the isolation tank I'd set up because I didn't want him harming the fish in there.
And all my other tanks already had fish in them.

Until Thursday Night.
When I noticed that in my 2.5 gallon betta tank....Magnus, my betta I'd had for around two years or so....had suddenly died.

Y_Y Which was depressing but he'd lived a pretty good long life.

And it opened up the opportunity to keep that tank empty for a little while until I could find the time to remove the big decorations from my big tank to catch the cichlid and then go put him in that betta tank.

However,
Last night, while I was up at Daddoo's...he ended up giving me four of his fish. A silver dollar and three goldfish to bring by home with me as he's taking down a couple of his tanks and didn't want those fish any more.
And I currently had the space to be able to put them in my big tank.

But as soon as the new fish were in the tank...there the cichlid was, nipping at them and chasing them around. Gah.

I got home late enough -like around midnight- that I couldn't do anything about it then.
I only hoped that with turning off the fish lights it would keep my new fish safe until I could get home from work today to get mr. cichlid out.

Which is exactly what I did.
I came home and pulled out the three large decorations I had in my tank so my cichlid couldn't hide underneath them.

And after about ten minutes of trying to catch him, as he was quick and kept hiding behind the plants that were still in the tank,

I CAUGHT HIM!
HA!

So I scooped him out of the tank and rushed him upstairs to my betta tank where I plopped him into it for a good long time out.

He's been pouting ever since.

Which has me concerned. As there's room enough for him to swim around a little bit.

But at a good four inches long already I know that the tank is too small to keep him in for too long.

Which leaves me with two options.
Buy him a slightly larger tank and move him into it.
Or else fish him out and bring him back to work so that he can try his chances elsewhere with a different fish owner.

Right now I'm leaning towards just bringing him back to work.
As I don't really want to set up a tank specifically just for him.
Especially since I don't have the space to set up like...the actual tank size this cichlid would need.
And I'd want to give him a good chance at a new home.

However, I may have to wait a few days first.
As I don't want to place him in with the other peacock cichlids and have him get beat up.
So I may have to wait until there's a bunch of new ones added in...or we sell out of the ones we have....

But yah.

So good news is that I got the cichlid out of the tank so my fish are safe and I can now more seriously look into getting new fish. -Though I'll probably wait until after Christmas to do so.

And hopefully I find a good home for mr. cichlid.

Like his coloration got so pretty.
but yah....he's not a good fit for my tank if he's going to be picking on all the other fish.

I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

Book Be Gone

It's a fact of life that things are always changing.

But that doesn't mean I always have to like these changes.

And I ended up getting an unpleasant surprise today while I was out shopping with Daddoo in HomeTown when we went to the local strip mall place that I've gone to for as long as I can remember.....

Only to discover that the Barnes and Noble that had been there for my entire childhood and probably long before I was even born--

Was GONE.

Totally GONE.
Store blank, sign taken down.
EMPTY.

Like last time I'd been up I'd noticed that they were doing some sales...like enough sales that I was wondering if they were closing.

But like there was no announcement or signs to indicate that their sales were closing sales.

So it was quite the nasty shock to come see a piece of my childhood....Gone.

I mean...technically the bookstore just moved locations.
But they might as well have just gone out of business because the new location is somewhere like 20 to 30 minutes north of Hometown. XP

Where apparently the city there is booming and such.

So like...yay that Barnes and Noble moved to a more popular location.

BUT GAH.
That was my childhood!
We would go to that bookstore constantly when I was growing up.
Whether it was after dinner, or after seeing a movie in the nearby theatre, or to kill time, or to hang with friends--I spent a lot of time in that store.

And now it's just...empty.
And will probably become something depressing. *exhales*

So yah.
I know things change.

But that was one change I wasn't expecting.
I mean Barnes and Noble?
*exhales*

A Porch Visitor

I found an unexpected visitor outside last night.

I had come upstairs to grab a package that I'd been notified was delivered.

And when I opened the door...there was a wide eyed tabbico kitty cat staring back at me.

lol I was like !!!! KITTY!!!
So I slowly sat down, kept the door open and was like "here kitty kitty it's okay." Because I didn't want to scare her off and wanted to see if she would come closer to let me pet her.

Which surprisingly she did.
She was all too happy to get petted a couple times before she decided to wander inside the house.

:S :S :S
which I was like!! YAY NEW PET!

But at the same time I was like "CRAP" because my roomie is allergic to furry creatures so it's not like I could actually keep the kitty cat.

Who had to belong to someone because her fur was really soft and she was quite fat so she was very well fed.

Thankfully, she only made it as far as underneath our coffee table before deciding that she preferred the outside.

But yah, I tried to convince her to let me pet her for a bit longer, but the silly kitty would only let me brush my fingers against her fur before she'd plop down just out of reach.

*shakes head*

Still.
It was nice to have a visitor for a bit. :D I love kitties.
Can't wait to get one of my own.

I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!

The Learning Curve

It's always interesting to see what is easy for people to grasp and what isn't easy for them to grasp.

Because like I can tell different people the same thing.
But they'll hold onto different bits of information.
Understanding some parts.
Misunderstanding others.
Forgetting yet other parts.

It's...interesting.

Especially when it involves training my new manager.

There's just something about the whole paperwork thing that they aren't quite comprehending.

Which I had a similar problem with my previous manager as well.

And I get it.
Receiving in the invoices of our shipments does take a bit of time to get used to how to receive in everything.

So I find myself repeating things.
Again and again and again.

*exhales*

Today wasn't much different.

Today was our animal count.
Which means that we have to have all the invoices received in before we count all the animals.
Because if we don't receive in all the shipments...that means when we log into the computer to get the list of the amounts of each animal...they won't show an accurate inventory.

Apparently my manager didn't comprehend that.

Which makes sense why the inventory was showing how we somehow had like nearly 6,000 crickets....
When we only get in about 3,000 a week (truthfully it's about half that because we keep getting shorted on our shipments)

Because if you count the crickets with the old number.
And adjust the counts.
Then add in the invoice containing the shipment of crickets that were already counted...
...means we basically added in the crickets twice.

If my logic makes sense...I think that makes sense.

But yah.
If we have 2,000 crickets and the invoice says we have 6,000 but there's a shipment of like another 1500 crickets we need to receive in.
Then if we adjust the inventory and take 4,000 crickets out of our inventory and THEN receive in the 1500 crickets.
That would mean that we'd have 3,500 crickets listed when we actually only have 2000.

But if you receive in the shipment first to indicate that we now have 7500 crickets on record but only 2000 in the store, then we'd take out 5,500 crickets so our online record will accurately represent the physical number.

Apparently my manager hadn't realized that?
I mean I've mentioned it at least three times before.
That all invoices have to be received in BEFORE we count the animals.

But again.
Today they didn't do that.
So I had to do a last minute adjustment to ensure that we would have the second result and not the first.

*exhales*

I know there's a learning curve with everything.
But I hope that my manager will be able to catch on a bit faster from here on out.
We'll see.

Until you next read these words;
I'll be watching the leaves.
Enjoy the day!
